A Little Time and a Keyboard: Lovin' From My French Oven

Lovin' From My French Oven

Sunday, October 23, 2011

The best gift that I have ever received may actually be my French oven (Le Creuset, bien sûr).   I have always enjoyed making stews, soups, and chilis.  However, they never had the same robust, full flavor that they do coming from my French oven.  And, home doesn't really feel like home without the aroma of a slow-cooked meal.  I look forward to using my French oven every week and am constantly perusing new recipes.

Last week, my culinary interest was peaked by a white chili recipe from the Food Network (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ellie-krieger/white-chili-recipe/index.html), so I had to try it in my French oven!  I have never had a white chili before, so I was curious about how it would compare to the red chilis that I know and love.  My verdict--I love this chili!  I found that it has the spice of tomato-based chili while using turkey instead of beef, chicken broth instead of tomatoes, and white beans instead of kidney beans.  To top it off, this recipe is not only flavorful but also colorful.  Below, you can see how vibrant it is:

I followed most of the recipe except I added a chili pepper and a habenero pepper, switched out chicken broth for vegetable broth and switched out the hominy for an orzo blend.  At the end of the recipe, I was a little nervous about adding the yogurt.  However, I bravely threw on a dollop and was pleastantly surprised by how much it tasted like sour cream with this particular dish.  What a great discorvery---I almost always have plain yogurt in the house so I am curious to find out how it will hold up as a substitute for sour cream in other dishes!  Below is a picture of my final product with the yogurt melting into the chili:

So, I have found another fabulous recipe for my beloved French oven!  I am looking forward to my next French oven creation and sharing it with you!
