A Little Time and a Keyboard: All the Stars in the Sky

All the Stars in the Sky

Sunday, February 26, 2012

My daughter has become very inquisitive about identifying the stars and planets in the sky.  She actually really likes to discern the planets from the stars and, of course, point one out saying, "That is actually a planet, right mom?"  For a kid that had billions of star charts while growing up, I know very little about astronomy.  I have gotten fed up with giving my daughter my best guesses on planets and stars.  So, I took to the net and found a nice site.

I am totally now a fan of Sky & Telescope's website.  The website has a video series called Skyweek (which also happens to be on PBS).  The series gives a little five minute synopsis of the major things you will see in the sky for that week.  It is really easy to follow and is not as confusing as star charts can be.   Additionally, the show gives a little explanation of why something is happening the way it is in the night sky.

These videos will definitely help me.  Also, they are presented in such a manner that I think my daughter will also gain a lot from them.  I thought that I would share for any of those budding astronomers out there!

  1. Hi Mel,
My son also loves asking me to identify the stars, unfortunately I know nothing! I recently found this app on my Iphone that allows me to hold it up to the sky where I am and it will identify the stars for me. Technology is just unbelievable!
