Free {or nearly free} local recurring events for summer!

Walk along the street at the Raupp Museum!
We have been busy gathering up some free events over the summer to help keep the kiddos busy and entertained. Each summer, I am amazed to find more and more free events to help fill our summer! We have uncovered some great ones and will share more as we find them! These are all recurring events--so they may be to fill more than one gap. Be sure to check and verify that the event has not be canceled before heading out as some of them are outdoors. We have linked to the websites to make it easier. The Wednesday Walks do specify that you call to register.

Free Days on the Farm

Blackberry Farm in Aurora is providing some free family museum days again this summer! On June 10, July 1, July 4, Aug. 19 and  Aug. 23, families will be able to enjoy Blackberry Farm from 9:30AM-3:30PM for free. (Note: Special education and entertainment features are not regularly scheduled during this time.) Blackberry Farm is quite a treat, combining history and fun! From the train to the carousel to the replica Main Street to the farm animals, my daughter always has a blast at Blackberry Farm! This is a phenomenal deal!

Try it Tuesdays and Wednesday Walks

Last summer, we spent quite a bit at the Raupp Museum in Buffalo Grove. We made most of the Try it Tuesdays free crafting events. After making a craft, we typically engaged in a scavenger hunt throughout the museum. This year, the crafting events run on Tuesdays from 1:00PM-3:30PM from June 11-July 30. Children will be able to churn butter, make a cornhusk doll, make candles and more. Be sure to check the schedule for specifics.

On Wednesdays, the Raupp Museum will be holding walks in the park from 10:00AM-11:00AM. Each walk will have a nature theme. You do need to call the Museum to register {(847) 459-2318}. However, the walks are free! Each walk has a different theme and they can be at different locations, so check the schedule.

Summer Camp at Bass Pro Shops

Bass Pro Shops have a number of free activities this summer. There will be family activities and crafts every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday June 8-July 14. Free activities include a free shooting range and a casting challenge. Free crafts include a popsicle stick fish and a bobber key chain. Events do vary by store. Here is the schedule for the Gurnee store.

Lego Club

Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights will be having a Lego Club once a month throughout the summer. The first meeting is next week! The club will get together June 13, July 11 and August 8. The sessions are geared towards those 3-10. Faith will supply the snacks and Legos, the kids will supply the imagination! The free event runs from 9:30AM-11:30AM each session.

Noonie Times

The Schaumburg Park District is having free shows at the Community Recreation Center Outdoor Theater on Wednesdays June 12-July 10 from 12PM-1PM. You can bring a blanket and food for a picnic. There also will be food available for purchase. In case of inclement weather, the program will be inside. Check with the Schaumburg Park District for the schedule and in case of cancellation.

Life Along the Des Plaines River

The Des Plaines Historical Center is having a series of hands on crafting events on Wednesdays June 26-August 7 from 1PM-3PM. The activities will center on the theme "Life along the Des Plaines River." While these events are not free, they may be worth a try. The events cost $2 per nonmember child, $1 per member child. Parents must stay with the children. The programs are suited for ages 5-11.
