Despite the snow today, I think that Spring is finally starting to break through! While the temperatures do seem to be playing a little patty cake, Friday looks like it is going to be sunny and 52! Let's keep our fingers crossed!
With St. Patrick's Day around the corner and maple sugaring in full swing, there are plenty of fun events in the 'burbs this weekend. Here are our picks:
Friday, March 14
Friday through Monday, the Fourth Annual Barrington Celtic Fest will be in full swing at McGonigal's Pub. The fun will include food vendors, entertainers, music and family-friendly activities during day. Admission during the day is free. The event is restricted to those 21 and older after 6PM and there is a $10 fee. Part of proceeds go to Relay for Life. Check schedule.
Create-a-Craft St. Patty's Day will provide some hands-on fun at the Mt. Prospect Public Library from 11:30AM-5:00PM. Create some St. Patty's Day crafts during this free drop in event.
Saturday, March 15
Celebrate sweetness at MapleFest at Red Oak Nature Center in Batavia from 9AM-2PM. The program runs on the hour. Learn how people and animals tap trees. Maple treats and hot beverages are available for small fee. The event is free!
Enjoy the Sugar Bush Fair at Spring Valley Nature Center 9AM-12PM on Saturday or Sunday. See how maple syrup is made. Visit a pioneer maple tapping camp. Enjoy a puppet show and a hayride. Have a pancake breakfast for $4 half stack, $5 full--discount if tickets bought in advance. There will be other treats for purchase. Free admission!
It is time to tap those trees! Saturday or Sunday, head over to the River Trails Nature Center in Northbrook for Sap's Rising from 1:30PM-2:30PM. Walk through the forest and learn about harvesting maple syrup. The event is free!
Learn about stunts during Don't Try this at Home: Secrets of a Stuntman at the Indian Trails Public Library in Wheeling from 2PM-3PM. Stuntman Christian Litke ,who worked on Divergent, will discuss his experiences as a stuntman. Admission is free but you must register!
Take a trip with Around the World in 8 Folk Tales at the Madden Theater in Naperville. The show is at 6PM. Admission is $15 per ticket, $10 for students. Reserve online.
Sunday, March 16
Take a trip on the wild side by visiting Scott Smith's All Animal Expo at the DuPage County Fair Grounds in Wheaton from 10AM-3PM. There will be exotic animals, vendors and more. $5 admission for 11 and under, free for 10 and younger.
Let the little ones get loose at the Shamrock Scramble at Bock Recreation Center in Schaumburg from 10AM-11AM. Come dressed for St. Patty's Day. There will be St. Patty's Day crafts and a snack. Then, head out to a field of four leaf clovers--each with a treat. Register by March 14, $5 per resident, $7 per non. The event is for ages 1-6.
Get your green on during the St. Patrick's Day Kid Fair at Whole Foods Northbrook from 11AM-2PM. Decorate Shamrock cookies, taste green smoothies, enjoy face painting and win prizes. There is a $5 donation per kid.
Get Totally Toady at the Des Plaines Public Library at 2:00PM or 3:30PM. The 1 hour event is a hands on amphibian program. The event is free but you should pick up tickets at Youth Services Desk 30 min prior to show.
Enjoy the evening at Full Moon Rising at the Heller Nature Center in Highland Park from 6:45PM-7:45PM. Take a short walk with a naturalist and settle in to see the moon rise over Lake Michigan. The event is free but you must register (847.433.6901).
