Wednesday Weekend Windup {Reenactments, Butterflies and more!}


The air is starting to get cooler, so it is fitting that some of the autumn-themed events are starting to pop up. Of course, I am of the firm belief that a few more 80 degree day are ahead. They just have to be, don't they?

Here is a look at our picks for this weekend:

ROAD TRIP: Lake Geneva in Wisconsin will be holding the Taste of Lake Geneva on Saturday, September 13. Festivals are always a fun time to visit the charming city on the lake but go early--parking isn't always fun!

Thursday, September 11
Thursday through Saturday, educators of young children (including principals, teachers, childcare workers, PTA parents, etc.) are invited to check out the Free Imagination Playground at the Kohl Children's Museum.  The event is free but you must RSVP!
Friday, September 12

The weather will be just right for the Fall Festival in Des Plaines Friday through Sunday. The fun includes musical entertainment, a kidszone!, carnival rides, a remote controlled boat sail, a Country Fair tent Sat & Sun and more. Check schedule for more details.

Saturday, September 13

Saturday and Sunday present your chance to swim for free during Free Swimming Weekend from 1PM-5PM at Olympic in Arlington Heights.

This weekend, Busse Woods in Elk Grove will host the Annual Chicago Powwow from 10AM-8PM Sat, 10AM-5PM Sun. The event will include dancing, drumming, Native American arts and crafts, Native American food and more. Admission is $15 per adult, $10 per child under 12 and seniors, 5 and under are free.

Learn about the Civil War during the Civil War Encampment along the Riverwalk in Batavia starting at 10AM Saturday and Sunday. The event includes cannon drills, horse demo, Mr. Lincoln will speak and more! The event is free!

If you are more into Revolutionary War history, there will be a Revolutionary War Reeanctment at Cantigny Park in Wheaton from 10AM-4PM Saturday and Sunday. The event will include artillery demonstrations, field music, uniforms and a battle. Parking is $5 per car, admission is free.

Sunday, September 14

Sunday is the Monarch Butterfly Festival at Lake Katherine in Palos Heights from 11AM-4:30PM. The event will include a butterfly tent, canoe and kayak rentals, arts and crafts, rock climbing wall, scarecrow making, food and beverage vendors and more, Admission is $5 pp, 3 and under free! {Lake Katherine is beautiful, definitely one to put on your list!}

Learn about pioneer life during Pioneer Day in Elk Grove Village from 1PM-5PM on Sunday. The fun includes candle making, historical games, reenactments, historical demos, a tour of the farmhouse and more. Admission is free but there is an additional charge if you want to make a scarecrow.

For a little afternoon of fun, join the Autumn Apple Fest at Hodges Park in Park Ridge from 2PM-4PM. The event includes autumn fun with family, autumn activities, autumn-themed food and more. Free admission.
