Wednesday Weekend Windup {Groundhogs, Chocolate, Winter Fun and More!}



This weekend is full of a hodge podge of fun including snow sculpting, dog sledding, constructing a birdhouse, groundhogs and my favorite---chocolate! Check out our ideas for local fun this weekend!

ROAD TRIP: Check out the
Winter Carnival on January 31 Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva, 9AM-8PM, skiing, snowboarding, snow sculpting, snow painting, toboggan race, candy scramble and more, free admission, check schedule of events. Lake Geneva will also be holding the National Snowsculpting Competition this weekend, so check that out too!


Thursday, January 29
  • January 29-February 2 Groundhog Day Events in Woodstock, Groundhog Awakening on January 29, Groundhog Trivia, opportunities to see Groundhog Day in the theater for free, Groundhog Tales, tour of movie sites, Groundhog Day Ceremony 7AM on Feb 2, additional events, most free, check schedule!
Saturday, January 31
  • January 31 Open House, Big Run Wolf Ranch, Lockport, 10AM-5PM, $5 pp, visit with animals, hot chocolate, bonfire, dog sledding demo
  • January 31-February 1 Chocolate Expo, Morton Arboretum, 9AM-4PM, collection of area chocolate vendors with samples and items for sale, free with admission PLUS check out the Enchanted Railroad also free with admission: winter rates are $9/adult, $8/senior, $6/child, get timed ticket for Enchanted Railroad at Visitor's Center. Easily one of our favorite events of the year!
  • January 31 The Big Game Tailgating Event, Whole Foods Market Schaumburg, 12PM-4PM, try recipes throughout the store and vote for your favorite, free!
  • January 31 Free Magic Show at Arlington Heights Historical Museum, 1:45PM, learn about the history of magic and be entertained by magician Jason Jourdan, tours of museum homes given after, magic show is free, tours are $4 per adult, $2 per child, tours are optional
Sunday, February 1
  • February 1 This Old Birdhouse, Crabtree Nature Center, 1PM-2:30PM, construct a birdhouse with the fam, $5 & one house per fam, must register 847-381-6592 , geared towards ages 10 and up
  • February 1 Groundhog Day, River Trail Nature Center, 1:30PM-2:30PM, learn facts and myths of groundhogs, free
