Wednesday Weekend Windup {Local Family Events for the Long Weekend}


We have a long weekend ahead, so it is time to line up some family fun! Let's hope that the weather is more pleasant than today! Oh, how will our gardens ever grow???!!!

Here are some ideas for fun this hopefully warm weekend:


ROAD TRIP: May 22-May 25 ChocolateFest in Burlington, Wisconsin, check our previous post for details. Who can say no to chocolate?

IN CHICAGO: May 23-24 Randolph Street Market Festival, huge vintage, antique and indie design market, gourmet foods, ethnic items, 10AM-5PM both days, $10 pp at gate, 12 and under free

Friday, May 22
  • May 22 Origami Creations, Mount Prospect Public Library, 5:30PM-7:00PM, for 3rd-6th graders, library staff will guide participants through origami folding, register
  • May 22 PacMan's 35th Birthday Bash, Level 257, Schaumburg, 11AM-Midnight free bowling and game play, 7PM-Midnight free admission, swag, special guests and more, check website for more info and Eventbrite tixs, also a VIP experience for $35
Saturday, May 23
  • May 23 Barb Sorenson Concert at Palatine Farmer's Market, 9AM-12PM, free
  • May 23-Sept 7 Butterflies and Blooms, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM, $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child 3-12, 2 and under free, members get $1 discount, parking $30 per car on weekends + federal holidays, $25 on weekdays
  • May 23-24 Barrington Art Festival, Downtown Barrington, 10AM-5PM, great art, live music, fun for kids, free admission
  • May 23 Butterfly House at Peck Farm opens, Geneva, Mon-Sat 10AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, suggested $2 donation per person, $5 per family, see our previous visit to Peck Farm, Note Butterfly Release Party is May 23 10AM-12PM and is $15 per child--you must register for this--otherwise visit during opening hours
  • May 23-24 Prairie Arts Festival, Robert Atcher Municipal Center, Schaumburg, 10AM-5PM, entertainment on 3 stages, kids activity tent, artists using various media, food truck court, free admission!
  • May 23 Art Faire at Norton's U.S.A., Barrington, 11AM-4PM, 5 local artists will be demonstrating their talent and displaying artwork, artwork will be for sale, visit the Barrington Art Festival and the Art Faire to make for a great day!
  • May 23-24 Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show, DuPage County Fair Grounds, 10AM-6PM Sat, 10AM-5PM Sun, $5 admission, $3 for seniors and students (13-18), 13 and under are free, dealers, demonstrations, exhibits, children's rock area, prospecting, lapidary art, silversmithing, geode splitting and more
  • May 23 The Organic Garden, Old Orchard Mall near the PlaySpace, Skokie, 2PM-3PM, kids learn gardening skills, free--every Tues and Sat through October!
Sunday, May 24
  • May 24 Kidfest, Lippold Park, Crystal Lake, 10AM-3PM, Team Chicago Kite performances, learn how to fly a kite, free kite to first 350 children, free
  • May 24 Sunday Funday, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1:00PM-2:00PM, search for slithering, flying and crawling creatures, dress for the outdoors
  • May 24 Jewish Youth Zone Mini Chefs, Des Plaines, 3:30PM-5:00PM, Kosher cooking series for kids cooking recipes from around the world, $7 per child per class, ages 2-8,  must register
