Wednesday Weekend Windup {So Much To Do, Only So Much Time}



Wow, there is a lot to do this weekend! When you see a large uptick in events, you know that spring is in full swing! Here are some of our favorite ideas this weekend!

(With a special nod to the Vietnam War Exhibit at the 1st Division Museum. My father served in the 1st Division in Vietnam.)

Friday, May 15
  • May 15-17 Chocolate Fest, Long Grove, 10AM-10PM Fri, Sat, 10AM-7PM Sun, chocolate concoctions, live music, taste of Long Grove booths, kids' zone activities, tickets $5 pp ($8 after 6PM Sat), 5 tastings for $5 tix separate
Saturday, May 16
  • May 16 Spring Fun Fair, Mountain View Rec Center, Des Plaines, 10AM-1PM, community health fair, touch a truck, pooch pet and pedal parade, safety town, inflatable, 100 free bike helmets to first 100 kids that need one, free admission!
  • May 16-17 Civil War Days, Naper Settlement, Naperville, $15/adult, $10 youth (4-12) and seniors, under 4 free, 10AM-4PM, more than 300 Civil War Reenactors camp out on site, battle at 2:30PM, famous personages like the Lincolns will visit, some era medical procedures demonstrated (discount if you purchase online through 5/15)
  • May 16-17 Spring Festival of Fine Craft, Oakbrook Center, Oak Brook, 10AM-6PM Sat, 11AM-6PM Sun, artists, art, live music, fun projects for kids, free admission
  • May 16 Organic Plant Sale and Farm Open House, Prairie Crossing Farm, Grayslake, 10AM-1PM, meet local organic farmers, purchase plants, tour farm, tour the sanctuary pond which is a designated sanctuary for endangered and threatened fish, kids' scavenger hunt, vintage tractors and more, free admission
  • May 16-17 Malott Japanese Garden Children's Festival, Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, 10AM-2PM, learn about Japanese children's celebrations, music, crafts and even a tea ceremony, see schedule, free admission, $30 parking fee for nonmembers, also--Model Railroad  is open, Chicago Botanic Gardens, open 10AM-5PM daily through Oct 25, $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 kids 3-12, under 3 free, members have $1 discount, 
  • May 16  Open House at Big Run Wolf Ranch, Lockport, 10AM-4PM, meet some native animals, raffles to bottle feed wolf pups, music, food and more, $6 admission pp
  • May 16 Opening of Vietnam Exhibit at 1st Division Museum, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, 10AM opening, there will be events later in the day like live music from 1PM-2PM, a '60s tribute concert 7PM-10PM, food vending in the evening and live animal visits with reptiles and snakes from Vietnam 1PM-4PM, the event is free but there is a $5 parking fee
  • May 16 Antique Fire Truck Show, Fire Station #1, Barrington, 11AM-1PM, take a peek at vintage fire trucks and equipment, free hot dogs and refreshments, games and activities, free!
  • May 16-17 Skokie Cultural Fest, Oakton Park, Skokie, 11AM-7PM, ethnic folk music, dance, food, a children's pavilion with activities, free admission
Sunday, May 17
  • May 17 Norwegian Constitution Day Parade, Hodges Park, Park Ridge, 12PM-4PM, parade steps off at 1PM, vendors, entertainment, activities, free!
  • May 17 Elmhurst Museum Day, 1PM-5PM, take a trolley between Elmhurst's three museums, family-focused activities, refreshments, free!
  • May 17 Frog Frenzy, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, head over to River Trail to see if you can make it as a frog!, free!
  • May 17 Golf Fest, Palatine Hills Golf Course, 2PM-5PM, free golf instruction, course tours, foot golf, raffles, giveaways and more
  • Also, Chocolate Fest, Skokie Cultural Fest, Civil War Days, Malott Japanese Garden Children's Festival and Oakbrook Spring Festival of Fine Craft from above
