Wednesday Weekend Windup {Keepin' the Kiddos Busy this Weekend}



Plans, plans, plans! We need plans to keep those kiddos busy, right! Fortunately, there are plenty of ideas for this weekend. We do have a list of our favorites places to hike and many of these places have nature centers or parks attached for more fun. So, check out our list of Places to Hike in the Suburbs for ideas. We will be adding to this list, so keep it handy!

As for this weekend, here are some ideas for keeping the kids busy:


ROAD TRIP: Train Extravaganza in Kenosha May 30-31! All makes and models of trains throughout the museums! Free!

ONGOING:
  • Butterflies and Blooms, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM, $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child 3-12, 2 and under free, members get $1 discount, parking $30 per car on weekends
  • Butterfly House at Peck Farm, Geneva, Mon-Sat 10AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, suggested $2 donation per person, $5 per family, see our previous visit to Peck Farm
Saturday, May 30
  • May 30 Prospect Heights Community Day, 9AM-12PM, located at police and fire stations, pancake breakfast, kids activities, inflatable, fire and police station tours, public works equipment displays, free!
  • May 30 Kite Day, Attea Middle School, Glenview, 10AM-3PM, bring your kites, learn tips from experts, some "Make Your Own Kite" kits available, free!
  • May 30 Pirate's Cove Opens, Elk Grove Village. 10AM-4PM, perfect theme park for kids 1-9, admission is $9 per resident child, $11 nonresident, parents are free
  • May 30-31 Deerfield Art Festival. 10AM-5PM, juried art festival, free
  • May 30 Ice Cream Social, Community Center Playground, Rolling Meadows, 12PM-1PM, free ice cream, activities, face painting and more
  • May 30 The Organic Garden, Old Orchard Mall near the PlaySpace, Skokie, 2PM-3PM, kids learn gardening skills, free--every Tues and Sat through October!
  • May 30 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 2:30PM-5:00PM, Carole Peterson Concert 3:30PM-4:15PM, celebrate all the books you have shared with your baby, toddler or preschooler or sign up to start, work on a literacy craft, free but must register (no card required), for PreK children and families
  • May 30 Anniversary celebration at Christie's Dairy Delights, Palatine, 6PM-10PM, live DJ, buy one scoop get one free 6PM-8PM
Sunday, May 31
  • May 31 Naperville Park District Kite Fly, Frontier Park, 10AM-4PM, gigantic kites, demos, activities, live music, giveaways and more! Free! 
  • May 30-31 Deerfield Art Festival. 10AM-5PM, juried art festival, free
  • May 31 Explore the Forest: 100 Years and Growing, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 12PM-4PM, tons of nature fun including climb a tree and archery, special muddy activities and more for free! **One of our FAVORITE events of the year!**
  • May 31 Family Day at the Ranch, Meadowsweet Ranch, Spring Grove, 1:00PM-5:00PM, pony rides, grooming station, games/prizes, coloring station, more, free!
  • May 31 River Round Up, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, bring a change of shoes because you will be jumping in the river to see what lies below the surface!
