Wednesday Weekend Windup {Wizard of Oz, Trains, Apples & Pioneers}


Oh, whatever to do this weekend....I've got some ideas:


Ongoing:
  • September 1-October 31 Amaze N Apples at Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard--a fall maze with a spin--it is made from apple trees! Check out this farm for apple picking, family fun activities including the maze, a bakery and more! Check website for hours, open daily September and October.
  • July 17-Nov 1, 2015 Nature Connects: Lego with Art by Sean Kenney, Morton Arboretum, amazing lego structures honoring nature, 27 figures, free with admission, $14 per adult, $12 seniors 65+, $9 kids 2-17, under 2 free
  • May 23-Sept 19 Butterfly House at Peck Farm, Geneva, Mon-Sat 10AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, suggested $2 donation per person, $5 per family, see our previous visit to Peck Farm
Friday, September 11
  • September 11-13 Midwest Wizard of Oz Festival, Odyssey Fun Farm, Tinley Park, Wizard of Oz characters, corn maize, costume contest, hay rides, pony rides, petting zoo, speakers and much more, $9 pp, $23 for whole weekend, can purchase online w/ convenience fee
Saturday, September 12
  • September 12 Raise the Woof Pet Festival, Melas Park, Mt. Prospect, 9AM-1PM, pet demos, contests, paw art t-shirts, dog baths, kids crafts, petting zoo and much more, free admission but small fees for activities
  • September 12 Vintage Fair at the Museum, Arlington Heights, Arlington Heights Historical Museum, 9AM-3PM, vintage and unique gifts to shop
  • September 12 Flying 4 Kids Kite Fly, Magreth Reimer Reserve, Palatine, 10AM, free, free raffles, free kites to first 100 kids, free goody bags to first 200

  • September 12-13 Revolutionary War Reenactments, Cantigny Park, 10AM-4PM, revoluntionary war reenactment, see schedule, free with $5 parking

  • September 12-13 Free Swimming Weekend, Arlington Heights, Olympic, 1PM-5PM either day
  • September 12 Moves Like Tori Fun Fair, Northbrook YMCA, 2PM-4:30PM, a family fun fair in honor of a Northbrook toddler that passed away unexpectedly, money is raised for the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood Program, outdoor activities, bounces, entertainment, dance party, bake sale and more, tickets are $15 pp and can be purchased through the Tori Wilensky Foundation
  • September 12 Superhero Movie Night, Harper College, Palatine, viewing of Guardians of the Galaxy outdoors, roving balloon artist, magician, superhero costume contest, movie starts at 7:15PM and pre-movie fun starts at 6PM, free!

Sunday, September 13
  • September 13 Bike the Garden, Chicago Botanic Garden, 7:30AM-9:30AM, bike areas usually off limits to bikers, free but parking is $30 per car, registration is at 7AM-7:30AM or register online, finish line festivities
  • September 13 French Market with a twist, Mt Prospect, 8AM-1PM, French goods, crepes and more fun!
  • September 13 Great Midwest Train Show, DuPage County Fairgrounds, Wheaton, 9AM-3PM, $7 for adults, kids 12 and under are free
  • September 13 Scandinavian Day Festival, Vasa Park, South Elgin, 10AM-6PM, Scandinavian entertainment, food, vendors and more, $10 admission, 12 years and under are free
  • September 13 Monarch Butterfly Festival, Lake Katherine, Palos Heights, 11AM-4:30PM, celebrating Monarch Migration, butterfly tent, hayrides, scarecrow making, kayak and canoe rental, $6 pp, 3 and under free
  • September 13 Luther Village Fall Festival, Arlington Heights, 11:30AM-5PM, family activities for all, free!
  • September 13 Family Picnic, Northbrook YMCA, 12PM-2:30PM, pack a picnic and meet by the playground for fun picnic games, free!
  • September 13 Pioneer Day, Elk Grove Historical Museum, Elk Grove Village, 1PM-5PM, candle-making demonstrations, historical crafts and games, a petting zoo, re-enactments and various other historic demonstrations, local artists work in the barn, scarecrow building for a fee, admission is free
  • September 13 River Round Up, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, bring a change of shoes because you will be getting in the river to see who lives below the surface of the water!
