Need some ideas for family fun this weekend? Here is what we gathered:


Road Trip: Dinosaur Discovery Museum in Kenosha: Dino Digs January 9 from 1PM-4:00M, kids dig for dinosaurs in simulated excavation site. No admission fee. Winter is a great time to check out the museum and you can check out the Kenosha Public Museum and Civil War Museum when you are there!

Friday, January 8


  • January 8 Evening Owl Hike, Crabtree Nature Center, 7PM, free but must register
  • Now-January 10  Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier  plenty of indoor fun inside including ice skating, rides, slides and even a ferris wheel, see website for ticket details

Saturday, January 9
  • January 9 Chili Open, Golf Center, Des Plaines, starts at 9AM and 12PM, annual winter tournament, chili served for lunch, prizes, $18 resident or $23 non for chili & golf, $10 for lunch only, please register ahead, lunch 11AM-12PM, fun for kids 8 and older and parents too!
  • January 9 Scribble Monster, Mt Prospect Public Library, 11AM-11:45AM, free but must register
  • January 9 Winter Scavenger Hunt, The Hollows Picnic Grove 1, Cary, 1:30PM-3:00PM, explore outside looking for evidence of life
  • Also, Wonderfest at Navy Pier.
Sunday, January 10
  • January 10 Free Family Fun Day, North Suburban YMCA, Northbrook, 12PM, facepainting, balloon artists, games, experience what the Y has to offer, at 2PM the pool opens for a family swim, free!
  • January 10  Volo Bog's Winterfest, 12PM-4:30PM live music, bog tours, snow sculpting, snow shoeing, winter crafts, free, donations accepted
  • January 10 Two Owls and a Naturalist, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, get up close and personal with two of River Trail's owls
  • Also, Wonderfest at Navy Pier.
