Wednesday Weekend Windup {Orchids, Abe Lincoln, Maple Syrup & More}




With the fluffy flakes of snow today, it is hard to believe that it will be in the 50's by weekend. I am actually enjoying this "best of both worlds" situation! If you need some inspiration for this weekend, here are my picks for family fun:

Friday, February 26:
  • February 26-28 Our Underwater World, Donald E. Stevens Convention Center, Rosemont, varying hours, children's activity center runs 10AM-3PM Saturday and Sunday, seminars, workshops, vendors, film festival, check for ticket options
  • February 26-28 Orchids by Hausermann, Villa Park, 9AM-5:30PM, see Hausermann's orchids in full bloom, 3.5 acre orchid range, plants for sale, enjoy beautiful blooms in a warm greenhouse, refreshments, demos, free admission
Saturday, February 27:
  • February 27 Family Preparedness for Emergency Disaster, Mount Prospect Village Hall, 9AM-12PM, play games appropriate for all ages that will help your family be more prepared for emergencies, free, hosted by Mt. Prospect Fire Department and Community Emergency Response Team
  • February 27  Juni B. Jones, Northbrook Theatre, 10:00AM or 1:00PM, $12 pp, reserve tickets online
  • February 27-28 Chicago Family Palooza, Pheasant Run Resort, St. Charles, 10AM-6PM, kids entertainment, magic shows, zip line, rock climbing wall, inflatables, petting zoo, more, general admission $8, activity wristband $15, check website for more details on tickets.
  • February 27 & 28 Sap's RisingRiver Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, walk through the forest as winter comes to an end and learn about the history of maple syrup production, free
  • February 27 Winter Astronomy, Heller Nature Center, Highland Park, 8PM-9PM, material most appropriate for adults and kids over 6, free, no registration necessary, canceled if cloudy

Sunday, February 28:
  • February 28 CreatorFair, Barrington Area Library, 1:30PM-4:30PM, celebrating Barrington makers--makers with a variety of tech and art creations will show their work, silk painter Kim Plummer (1:30PM-3:00PM) and Robo Rebels First Lego League Team will be featured (2PM-4PM), sip hot cocoa while perusing creations, creations from both kids and adults, free
  • February 28 Black History Month: Underground Railroad Hike, Sand Ridge Nature Center, South Holland, 11AM-3PM, educational display and interactive hike, imaginary journey uses route used for Underground Railroad, free
  • February 28 This Old Birdhouse, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, construct a birdhouse, plans and placement suggestions included, one per family, $5, register--space is limited 847-381-6592
  • February 28 Meet Abe Lincoln, Northbrook Public Library, 2:00PM-3:30PM, free, a dramatic portrayal of Abraham Lincoln sharing stories of his life and family as well as some crises he faced during the Civil War, more suited for teens, adults
