Wednesday Weekend Windup {St. Patrick's Day, Maple Syrup, Fairy Tales and More!}


March means time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and maple syrup! This weekend is full of St. Patrick's Day and maple syrup fun and even fairtytales, dinosaurs and more! Here are my picks for the weekend:
  • ROAD TRIP: Paleofest. Burpee Museum of Natural History, Rockford, March 11-13, great way for dino-fans to interact with paleontologists, see website for more info
  • St. Patrick's Day Parade and River Dyeing in Chicago!

  • January 16-March 26 Once Upon a Time....Exploring the World of Fairy Tales at Arlington Heights Memorial Library: new play exhibit where kids can step into 7 different fairy tales, geared towards children ages 3-10, see other events associated with exhibit

  • March 12-13 Sugar Bush Fair, Spring Valley Nature Center, Schaumburg, 9AM-12PM, demos of maple syrup production, a pioneer maple sugaring camp, puppet show, hayride, admission is free, also a breakfast with pancakes, $4 for half stack, $5 for full if register before, $5 and $6 respectively at the door
  • March 12-13 Maple Sugaring Spring Fever, Naper Settlement, Naperville, 10AM-4PM Sat, 1PM-4PM Sun, maple tapping demo, hands-on activities, $12/adult, $10/senior, $8/youth (4-12), Naperville residents and kids under 4 are free
  • March 12 Easter Egg Hunt, Arlington Heights Historical Museum, 10AM, ages 10 and under, egg hunt, games, refreshments, must register, free for members, $5 for non
  • March 12&13 Festival of the Sugar Maples, Coral Woods Conservation Area, Marengo, 10AM-3PM, learn how maple syrup is made, how trees produce sap and how it is collected, see syrup being created in the evaporator, hikes, free admission, treats for sale
  • March 12 Dennehy Irish Dancers, Mt. Prospect Public Library, 11AM-11:45AM, free but registration required
  • March 12 Dog Days, Bass ProShops, Gurnee, 11AM-4PM, bring in fido, free photo of fido and your family, free seminars with veterinarians, giveaway bag to first 100 guests, free
  • March 12&13 Maple Syrup Hikes, Ryerson Woods, Riverwoods, 12PM-2PM every half hour, see tapping in process, see how tap turns to sap, $6 pp, children under 3 free, must register: 847-968-3321
  • March 12 Fractured Fairy Tale Theatre, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 1PM-2PM, students from Rolling Meadows High School act out slightly skewed versions of our favorite fairy tales, best for older children and adults, free but must register
  • March 12 Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!, Des Plaines Public Library, 1PM-4PM, drop in craft from 1PM-3PM, Seusstastical Celebration 3PM-4PM with face painting, music, dance and more, dress up as your favorite Seuss character and be rewarded, free but pick up ticket for Seusstastical at Youth Services desk 30 min prior
  • March 12-13 Maple Sugaring Days, LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, St. Charles, 1PM-4PM, learn how to tap maple trees, learn how to set a tap, see sap thickening into syrup over a fire, take a nature hike, taste local syrup, free
  • March 12&13 Sap's Rising, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, walk through the forest as winter comes to an end and learn about the history of maple syrup production, free
  • March 12 McNulty Irish Dancers, Paddy's on the Square, Long Grove, 1:30PM, free
  • March 12 Sounds of Brazil, Morton Grove Public Library, 2PM, explores the history, culture and geography of Brazil through music, there will be a hands-on percussion line, free 
Sunday, March 13
  • March 13 Great Midwest Train Show, DuPage County Fairgrounds, Wheaton, 9AM-3PM, exhibitors, model railroads to view, trains for kids to run, $7/adult, kids under 12 are free
  • March 13 Get Sticky! Maple Syrup Sunday, Fullersburg Woods, Oakbrook 10AM-2PM, 75-minute guided stroll through the woods to learn about how maple syrup is produced, $10 per person, must register--register online
  • Also, Sugar Bush Fair, Sap's Rising, Maple Sugaring Spring Fever, Festival of the Sugar Maples, Maple Syrup Hikes, Maple Sugaring Days, The Orchid Show and Fairytale Exhibit from above.
