Wednesday Weekend Windup: {Trains, St. Patrick's Day, Maple Syrup and More!}

Days are warm in the Oak Park Conservatory!
March is here--which means it will be officially spring soon! Events this weekend definitely give that spring feeling--orchids, conservatories, maple syrup and St. Patrick's Day! Here are my picks for the weekend!
  • ROAD TRIP: Sock Monkey Madness, Midway Village Museum in Rockford, March 5-6, 11AM-4PM, make a monkey workshop, patches for monkeys, yarn maze, dance of the sock monkeys, treasure hunt safari and more, $8 per adult, $5 kids 3-17, kids under 3 free, additional charges for some activities, check online

Friday, March 4:
  • March 4-6 Orchids by Hausermann, Villa Park, 9AM-5:30PM, see Hausermann's orchids in full bloom, 3.5 acre orchid range, plants for sale, enjoy beautiful blooms in a warm greenhouse, refreshments, demos, free admission
Saturday, March 5:
  • March 5 Dog Admission Day to Morton Arboretum, Lisle, bring your dogs to the arboretum 7AM-sunset, dog admission is $5 per dog, regular admission--$9 Adults ages 18–64

  • March 5&6 Sap's RisingRiver Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, walk through the forest as winter comes to an end and learn about the history of maple syrup production, free
  • March 5&6 High Wheeler Train Show, Harper College Sports Center, Palatine, 9AM-5PM, exhibits, operate trains, Lego railroad, crafts, face painting, safety demos and more, $8 adults & teens, $2 kids 5-12, under 5 free, coupon for free kids admission online, admission is cash only at the door
  • March 5-6 Maple Syrup Hikes, Ryerson Woods, Riverwoods, 12PM-2PM every half hour, see tapping in process, see how tap turns to sap, $6 pp, children under 3 free, must register: 847-968-3321
  • March 5-6 Festival of the Sugar Maples, Coral Woods Conservation Area, Marengo, 10AM-3PM, learn how maple syrup is made, how trees produce sap and how it is collected, see syrup being created in the evaporator, hikes, free admission, treats for sale
  •  March 5 St. Patrick's Day Parade, Elmhurst, 12PM, free
  • March 5 Fun Fair, Maine West, Des Plaines, 4:30PM-7:30PM,bounce house, balloon artist, juggling, games, prizes and more fun, geared towards preschool and elementary aged children, free admission, tickets are $.25 each

Sunday, March 6:
  • March 6 KidsFest, Oak Park Conservatory, 10AM-2PM, hands-on eco-activities, visit several eco-climates, visit George the Parrot, enjoy early flowers, free
  • March 6 Deerfield World's Fair, Language Stars, Bannockburn, 11AM-1PM, learn about cultures around the world, snacks, crafts, glitter tattoos and more, free
  • March 6 Under the Ice and Mud, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, sleeping critters are starting to stir, come see who is ready to wake up, free
  • March 6 Chicago Wolves Allergy Awareness Nut Free Game, 3PM, Nutphree's is holding an allergy-free egg hunt right after the game! See website for more details.
