Time to think ahead to the weekend! Lots of fun--Kid Fest in Barrington, Big Trucks in Palatine, free admission for Moms at Rockford Museums and more! My picks below:

  • March 19-May 15 Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens' tropical conservatory is aflutter with butterflies! A special emergence area allows visitors to witness the butterfly life cycle as butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Enjoy a peaceful stroll among the butterflies admiring the conservatories water features and sculptures. Adults $6 residents/$8 non, Seniors, Veterans and ages 5-18 $4/$6, ages 3-4 $1/$2, age 2 and under are free. (Moms free on Mother's Day)
  • April 8-September 25 Ribbit! The Exhibit, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 23 larger-than-life copper frog sculptures of frogs performing different activities throughout the arboretum, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+ , $9 Youth ages 2–17 (discounted admission on Wednesdays)

  • May 6-8 Northbrook-On-Ice, Northbrook Sports Center, figure skating students show, tickets and more info online
Saturday, May 7
  • May 7 ROAD TRIP: Opening Day at Old World Wisconsin
  • May 7 The Big Sit and International Migratory Bird Day, at all of the FPDCC nature centers including Crabtree Nature Center, River Trail and Trailside, 5:30AM-5:00PM, birders of all levels come to help count the birds, also try the Migratory Bird Obstacle Course or make toilet paper roll binoculars, free
  • May 7 Arts and Crafts Adventure, Hodges Park, Park Ridge, 9AM-5PM, paintings, pottery, glassworks, jewelry and more, demos, juried art show, free admission
  • May 7-8 Citizens for Conservation Native Plant Sale, Good Shepherd Hospital, Lake Barrington, 9AM-3PM
  • May 7 Free Comic Book Day, Barrington Area Library and South Branch, 9AM-5PM, while supplies last, 1 per person
  • May 7 Free Comic Book Day, Mt. Prospect Public Library, all day pick up a free comic book in the Fiction/AV/Teen or Youth Services
  • May 7 Country in the Park, Downers Grove Museum, 11AM-3PM, blacksmithing, heirloom gardening and butter making demos, visit with farm animals and more, free
  • May 7 Great Glasses Play Day, Foresight Vision, Long Grove, 10AM-2PM, celebrating children who wear glasses or have a vision impairment, crafts, coloring contest, raffles, refreshments, free glasses cleaning cases, free transitions lenses upgrade for glasses purchased during event, free
  • May 7 Big Trucks, FAC Parking Lot, Palatine, 10AM-1PM, kids get up close to vehicles and can even sit in the driver's seat, goody bags for first visitors, vendor tables, crafts, concessions, free admission
  • May 7 Kid Fest, Citizens Park, Barrington, 11AM-3PM, bring a kite to fly, construct a bird house, run a relay, climb a tree and more, free but must register and get wristband at event, rain date May 8

  • May 7 Free Trail Walk, Fuller Air Station Prairie, Glenview 2PM-3PM, free guided trail walk focusing on plants, native animals and prairie wetlands
  • May 7 Live Auction Cake Sale at Norton's U.S.A. in Barrington, cakes auctioned off to benefit Relay for Life, 3PM
