Wednesday Weekend Windup {Vintage Days, Airplanes, Boats, Hummingbirds & More}

Just because we are already midway through August, it doesn't mean there isn't more summer fun! Here are my picks for the weekend:

Ongoing
  • April 8-September 25 Ribbit! The Exhibit, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 23 larger-than-life copper frog sculptures of frogs performing different activities throughout the arboretum, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+, $9 Youth ages 2–17 (discounted admission on Wednesdays)
  • May 28-Sept 5 Butterflies and Blooms opens at Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM, enjoy immersing yourself in the live butterfly exhibit, adults $6, seniors $5, kids $4 (3-12), 2 and under free, discount for members, packs available, $25 parking per car on weekdays, $30 weekends if not members
  • July 9-Labor Day Bristol Renaissance Faire, Bristol, WI, Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, see website for schedule and tickets
  • Through 9/17 Butterfly House at Peck Farm, Geneva, Monday-Saturday 9AM-5PM, Sunday 12PM-4PM, $2 suggested donation, $5 per family, weather dependent
Friday, August 19
  • August 19 Back to School Campfire, Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley, Schaumburg, 8:00PM-9:30PM, come to roast a marshmallow and enjoy a wagon ride, bring a blanket or chairs, $2 pp
  • August 19-21 Fox Lake's Land and Lake Days, movie by the lake (Jaws), cardboard boat race, boat showcase, body art, face painting, caricatures, live music, food vendors, performance art, and more, free admission, see schedule
  • August 19-20 Little Bear Ribfest, Century Park, Vernon Hills, 6 rib vendors, live blues music, bring your chairs and blankets, $5 pp admission
  • August 19 Family & Cruise Night followed by Grease showing, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, $5 for parking per car, free admission, antique cars, scavenger hunt, live music, guided walking tour of tanks, Grease showing at 8:30PM, bring lawn chairs and blankets
Saturday, August 20
  • August 20 Bug Fest, Lippold Park and Red Oak Nature Center, Batavia, 9AM-1PM, see schedule, free
  • August 20-21 Chicago Air and Water Show, North Avenue Beach, Chicago, 10AM-3PM
  • August 20 Dog Days, Knupper Nursery, Palatine, 10:45AM-3:00PM, dog parade at 10:45AM, dog wash benefitting Buddy Foundation 11AM-3PM, animal communicator giving mini readings ($40)--must reserve spot, Kriser's booth, free admission, bring your dog and get 20% off your purchase (or a picture of your dog)
  • August 20 Kite Fly, Peck Farm, Geneva, 11AM-3PM, demos from Chicago Kite, first 500 kids get free paper kite to assemble and fly, free 
  • August 20 Charlotte's Web, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 11AM-12PM, enjoy this adaptation by American Eagle Productions, free but must register, minimum age kindergarten, no card required
  • August 20 Hummingbird Fest, Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, Lemont, 9AM-2PM, viewing of birds, demos on how they are banded for resources, activities, free
  • August 20-21 Malott Japanese Garden Summer Festival, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-2PM, listen to taiko drum and koto harp, traditional folktales, tea ceremony at 10:30AM, crafts, free admission, parking is $30 per car or $25 if purchased online in advance
  • August 20-21 Long Grove Vintage Days, Long Grove, 10AM-6PM, antique/vintage/repurposed vendors, local food vendors, live music, free hayrides with historical narration 12PM-4PM, Illinois Wheelman on antique bikes, more, free admission
  • August 20 Trail Walk at The Grove, Glenview, 2PM-3PM, free guided trail walk

Sunday, August 21
  • August 21 Disc Golf Tournament, Shepard and Keller Park, Deerfield, 12:30PM-2:30PM, players of all levels are invited to join the 9 hole tournament, other contests, free
  • August 21 Cicadas!, Crabtree Nature Center, 1PM, learn about these secretive animals that make themselves known in the August heat, free
  • Also Fox Lake's Land and Lake Days, Chicago Air and Water Show, Long Grove Vintage Days and Malott Japanese Garden Summer Festival.
