Wednesday Weekend Windup {Stars, Hummingbirds and Green Living!}




Summer is flying by! Some kids are heading back to school soon! My daughter still has 2 weeks left. But school will be here before we know it! Here are my favorite ideas for savoring this summer weekend:

Ongoing:
  • April 8-September 25 Ribbit! The Exhibit, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 23 larger-than-life copper frog sculptures of frogs performing different activities throughout the arboretum, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+ , $9 Youth ages 2–17 (discounted admission on Wednesdays)
  • May 28-Sept 5 Butterflies and Blooms opens at Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM, enjoy immersing yourself in the live butterfly exhibit, adults $6, seniors $5, kids $4 (3-12), 2 and under free, discount for members, packs available, $25 parking per car on weekdays, $30 weekends if not members
  • Through 9/17 Butterfly House at Peck Farm, Geneva, Monday-Saturday 9AM-5PM, Sunday 12PM-4PM, $2 suggested donation, $5 per family, weather dependent
  • July 9-Labor Day Bristol Renaissance Faire, Bristol, WI, Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, see website for schedule and tickets

Thursday, August 11:

  • August 11-14 Hinkley Fest, Hinkley Park, Park Ridge, carnival rides, live music and more, see website
Friday, August 12:
  • August 12-14 Lincolnshire Arts & Eats, Taste of Lincolnshire combined with art festival, check website for more info
  • August 12 Food Truck Frenzy, Family Aquatic Center, Palatine, 5PM-9PM, free goodie bags to first 150, free giveaway to first 150, free koozie with purchase of soda from PPD tent, bring blanket and chairs, stay for summer concert, free admission
  • August 12 Perseid Star Party, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, 6PM-12AM, Adler Planetarium's annual party, view the night sky, launch a rocket, hands-on activities, build a galaxy-sized puzzle and more, $9 in advance for Adler members, Cantigny members and kids 3-11, $12 for non members; $15 day of for all adults, $9 for kids CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN

Saturday, August 13:
  • August 13 Magical Gardens Family Event, Midway Village, Rockford, 10AM-3PM, many hands-on stations like herb identification, making lavender bath salt, viewing butterfly life cycle and more; tour village gardens, learn how plants were used in kitchens in 1800's and more, admission, $7/adult, $5/kid 3-17.
  • August 13 Juggling and Comedy with Mike Vondruska, Mount Prospect Public Library, 11AM-11:45A, free but you must register
  • August 13 & 14 Hummingbird Sit, Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, Lemont, 10AM-12PM, take a seat and watch for hummingbirds, a naturalist will teach you about their behaviors and how to attract them to your yard, free
  • August 13-14 Kite Festival, Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, 10AM-3PM, kite flies, kite demos, kite building, bring your kite for public kite flying, see schedule, free with parking $30/car, purchase parking in advance for discount
  • August 13-14 Civil War Days, Blackberry Farm, Aurora, 9:30AM-5:30PM, reenactment Saturday at 5:15PM, encampment, speakers, tea with the Lincolns at 2PM, $8 adults, $7 kids--discount if residents of Aurora 
  • August 13 Free Guided Trail Walk at Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie, Glenview, 11AM-12PM
  • August 13 Community Health & Wellness Expo, Hoffman Estates, 1PM, free health care screenings for adults, kids activities and prizes, free backpacks with school supplies

Sunday, August 14:
  • August 14 Great Midwest Train Show DuPage County Fairgrounds, Wheaton, 9AM-3PM, exhibitors, model railroads to view, trains for kids to run, $7/adult, kids under 12 are free
  • August 14 French Connection Day, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, 10AM-4PM, French inspired family activities, free with $10 parking
  • August 14 Evanston Green Living Fest, Main Street, Evanston, 1PM-6PM, green market and exhibits, kids activities, food vendors and more, free admission
  • August 14 Animal Olympics, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM-3PM, can you run faster than a deer or hop farther than a toad? visit and compete with some local records, free
