Wednesday Weekend Windup {Birds, Orchids and Winter Fun!}



A mix of winter and spring-ish events this weekend! Here are some ideas for family fun in the Chicago suburbs:

Ongoing:
  • January 13 - February 19 Enchanted Railroad at The Morton Arboretum, Lisle. The display is quite intricate and families will enjoy picking out a variety of miniatures. Viewing the railroad is free with regular Arboretum admission.
  • February 11-March 26 The Orchid Show, Chicago Botanic Garden, Orchids in Vogue, some days feature live music, some hands-on elements, dress made of organic materials including orchids and more, adults $10/$12 for members/nonmembers; $8/$10 for kids and seniors; parking is $30 per car; you may purchase tickets and parking online
Saturday, February 18:
  • February 18 Free Bird Tales Story Hour, Wildbird Shack, Mount Prospect, 10:30AM-11:30AM, free stories, cookies & refreshments, RSVP by calling 847-873-0409; emailing info@wildbirdshack.com or replying on Facebook
  • February 18 Spectacular Saturday - Switzerland, Midway Village, Rockford, 10:30AM-12PM, explore Swiss culture through activities & a craft, $7 per adult, $5 per child 3-17 years old (museum admission)
  • February 18 Hawthorn Woods Winter Carnival, Hawthorn Woods Community Park, 12:00PM-3:00PM, games, horse drawn carriage rides, music and more, free
  • February 18 Snow Daze, Kenosha, 12PM-3PM, 50 ice sculptures, winter games, library crafts and more, free
Sunday, February 19:
  • February 19 Great Backyard Bird Count, Waterfall Glen, Darien, 10AM-11:30AM, count birds and record findings, under 18 accompanied by an adult, free but must register at 630-933-7248 or online
  • February 19 Winter Survival and Spring Arrival, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, free, learn how animals adapt to survive the winter and how they prepare for spring
