Old Fashioned Christmas Chicago Suburbs

There is just some extra comfort in celebrating Christmas with some truly old fashioned elements. Hayrides, baking on the wood stove, Victorian decorations and more really give that warm fuzzy holiday feel! Here are five ways to experience this in the Chicago suburban area this Christmas. I did add one choice in Rockford because it is a Victorian Village after all!


  • November 30-January 8 Christmas on the Farm and Life by Lamplight Farm House Tours, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, Thursdays-Mondays, see times. The farm house will be decorated for the holidays and full of aromas of holiday treats baked in a wood stove. Learn the origins of holiday traditions and more. Free.
  • December 2 & 3 Christmas in the Valley, Volkening Heritage Farm Schaumburg, 12PM-4PM each day. See how a German-American Farm celebrated Christmas in the late 1800's. Learn about traditional foods and simple, homemade gifts. Visit a traditional St. Nicholas and more. $3 per person, ages 3 and under are free.
  • December 8-10 & 15-17 Holiday Express, Blackberry Farm, Aurora. Times very each day so check schedule. Classic holiday stories, Victorian Christmas, blacksmith making  holiday toys, holiday train, hay rides and more delight. $5 per person, kids 2 and under are free.
  • December 9 & 10 Victorian Holiday Celebration, Midway Village, Rockford, 11AM-4PM. Enjoy immigrant holiday traditions, horse drawn carriage rides, Victorian decorations, crafts, Christmas carols and more. Admission is $7 per adult, $5 per child. Different family packages available. Kids ages 2 and under are free.
  • December 9 Merry & Bright: A Victorian Christmas, Blodgett House, Downer's Grove, 1PM-5PM, Learn Victorian Christmas traditions. Enjoy Victorian decorations and carols, a campfire, Santa and reindeer and more. Treats available for purchase. Free admission.

  1. I've only been to Chicago in the summer, but now I see that I need to visit during Christmas time! I love all of these events celebrating history. I'd really like the Victorian events. These sound so cool!
