Wednesday Weekend Windup {Taffy, Trees, Snow Fleas and More}


Local weekend family fun in the Chicago suburbs -- my picks:
Ongoing:
  • January 13-February 19 Enchanted Railroad at The Morton Arboretum:The Morton Arboretum in Lisle will be hosting its annual Enchanted Railroad event. The display is quite intricate and families will enjoy picking out a variety of miniatures. Free with regular Arboretum admission
  • February 10 - March 25 The Orchid Show, Chicago Botanic Garden, a much needed tropical infusion in the middle of winter, Tickets are:Adults: $10/$12 Seniors 62+: $8/$10 *Children age 3–12: $8/$10 Parking is $25 per car; Purchase tickets online to ensure availability
  • January 20-March 30 XOXO An Exhibit on Love and Forgiveness, Arlington Heights Memorial Library

  • February 15-25 Shrek the Musical, Prairie Lakes Theater, Des Plaines, various times and ticket prices, pre-reserve, see website

  • February 17 Super Saturday Blues, Mount Prospect Public Library, 11AM-12PM, free, Recording artist Fruteland Jackson presents a blues concert for families in honor of African American History Month. He’ll skillfully strum his guitar, ukulele, and banjo while sharing fascinating facts about the blues and its deep roots in American and African-American history and culture, must register

  • February 18 Family Winter Tree Hunt, Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley, Schaumburg, 10AM-11:30AM, learn about local trees while following a map, for families with kids ages 5 and older, $6.50 per resident, $9 per non, must register
  • February 18 In Search of the Snow Flea, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, hunt the trail for snow fleas and learn about other winter insects, free
  • February 18 Tree Identification, Stillman Nature Center, Barrington, 2PM, learn how to identify trees, ages 10 and up, free, be prepared for the weather
Monday, February 19:
  • February 19 Cocoa & Kindness, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 11:30AM-2:30PM, join the Teen Advisory Board for a hot cocoa bar and little acts of kindness, free
Also, a visit to the Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn is a great way to learn about native wildlife and animal rehabilitation.
