Plenty of local family fun in the Chicago Suburbs this weekend to enjoy including both maple sugaring events and St. Patrick's Day! My picks:

  • March 9 PaddyGrass Barrington Area Library, 8PM-9:30PM, live music -- traditional Irish ballads and reels, free
Saturday, March 10:
  • March 10 Storytelling Workshop, Arlington Heights History Museum, 9AM-11:30AM, free but register
  • March 10 St. Patrick's Day Parade, Naperville, 10AM
  • March 10-11 Festival of the Sugar Maples, Coral Woods Conservation Area, Marengo, 10AM-3PM, learn how trees produce sap and how it is collected, see syrup made in the evaporator house, hikes, free admission, treats for sale
  • March 10 St. Partrick's Day Parade, Elmhurst, 12PM
  • March 10-25 Maple Syrup Hikes on weekends, Ryerson Woods, Riverwoods, 12PM-2PM every half hour, see tapping in process, see how tap turns to sap, $6 pp, children under 3 free, must register: 847-968-3321
  • March 10 & 11 Sap's Rising, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, walk through the forest as winter comes to an end and learn about the history of maple syrup production, free
  • March 10 St. Patrick's Day Parade, St. Charles, 2PM
  • March 10 City Kid Theater St. Patrick's Day Party, Glenview, 6PM-9PM, ages 5-14, singing, dancing, pizza, $10, must register
Sunday, March 11:
  • March 11 Maple Syrup Harvest Sunset Woods Park, Highland Park, 10AM-11AM or 11:30AM-12:30PM, for ages 6 and up, learn how to make maple syrup through hikes and activities, hands-on tapping, $10 pp, must register by March 9
  • March 11 Great Midwest Train Show, DuPage County Fairgrounds, 9AM-3PM, exhibitors, model railroads to view, trains for kids to run, $7/adult, kids under 12 are free
  • March 11 Reptile Rampage, Lake Forest Rec Center Gym, 10AM-4PM, $10 pp (donation), kids 3 and under are free, large reptile exhibition, hands-on learning, representatives from area zoos, nature centers, etc. will be present
  • March 11 St. Patrick's Day Event, Peggy Kinnane's Arlington Heights, 12PM-6PM, face painting, Irish dancing, magician and more, reservations recommended
  • March 11 Easter Bunny, Berry Yo, Arlington Heights, 1PM-3PM, free
  • March 11 Grove Arrival Day, Kennicott House, The Grove, Glenview, 2PM-4PM, featuring daughters Alice and Cora (costumed interpreters) who will show us what life in the 1840's was like, tea and refreshments, free
