Illumination over the lake at Morton Arboretum

Holidays are arriving here in the Chicago suburbs! There are plenty of fun events this weekend with winter and holiday themes! Here are my picks:

Ongoing:

  • November 17-January 1 Illumination at Morton Arboretum, interactive light experience in the trees, special events on certain days, see schedule, closed Mondays except December 31, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas, see website for ticketing details -- I recommend reserving tickets in advance!
Thursday, November 15:
  • November 15-18 Autumn Festival, An Arts and Crafts Affair, Villa Park, variety of times, see website, $10 per adult, $9 per senior, kids under 10 are free
Friday, November 16:
Saturday, November 17:
  • November 17  Farmhouse Museum Tours, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 10AM-4PM, tours on the hour, blacksmithing demo at 1:30, free
  • November 17 Fall Family Fest, Dunn Museum, Libertyville, 10AM-5PM, 10AM-12PM and 2PM-4PM -- kids activities and crafts plus learn about Potawatomi, how they built their homes and how they cultivated food, story time at 12PM and 4PM, admission, $6 adults, $3 seniors and children
  • November 17-18 Christmas at the Mill Holiday Boutique, Graue Mill, Oakbrook, 10AM-5PM
  • November 17-18 Gnome Globes and Gnome Hunt, Morton Arboretum, 11AM-2PM, Children's Garden, hunt for gnomes in the Children's Garden (hunt is free with admission), then create a globe to bring home, globes are $7 pp for members, $10 for non, must purchase ticket in visitor's center, limited number, admission is separate, weather permitting
  • November 17 Yorkville Holiday Weekend, variety of events throughout the day including Santa visits, carnival games, tree lighting, fireworks, a parade and more
  • November 17 Lapidary Day, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, Elmhurst, 10AM-5PM, see demos from lapidary artists, hands-on activities, bring your rock to identify, $5 adults, $4 seniors, $3 students, $2 ages 7-12, under 7 free
  • November 17-18 Santa's Workshop, Thrown Elements, Arlington Heights, craft with Santa -- make a handprint keepsake, $25 per child, 10:30AM-12PM or 1PM-2:30PM, must register
  • November 17 Great Works Theatre Company Presents "Lyle the Crocodile," Mount Prospect Public Library, 11AM-12PM, free but must register
  • November 17 Light Up the Night Highland Park, Port Clinton Square, 3PM-5PM, sleigh rides, carolers,scavenger hunt, Santa, promos and treats and businesses, free
  • November 17-18 Happy Holly Days, Downtown McHenry, Nov 17 4PM-7PM Holiday Market and family fun, Nov 18 10AM-2PM Christmas Walk, sample and shop, wagon ride, trolley ride, Toys for Tots Parade at 2pm, see the Santa House
  • November 17 Moosheart Holiday Lights 5K, Mooseheart, 5PM, run or walk through the annual holiday light display, $40 per adult, $20 per child, money is donated to Mooseheart Child City and School
Sunday, November 18:
  • November 18 46th Annual Settlers' Day, Sand Ridge Nature Center, South Holland, 10AM, living history demonstrators, history hikes, crafts, imaginary train and more, free, nonperishable food donations appreciated
  • November 18 McHenry County Holiday Fest, McHenry County College, 10AM-3PM, meet Santa, face painting, magician, crafts, vendors and more
  • November 18  Farmhouse Museum Tours, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 10AM-4PM, tours on the hour,  free
  • November 18 Cozy Cocoa Concert, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 2PM-3PM, embrace "Hygge" while enjoying a concert at the library, the setting will be comfy, bring your own blankets and dress comfortably, enjoy cocoa during the performance, free but must register
  • November 18 Nocturnal Owl Hunters, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, learn about owls and what makes them unique, free
