Wednesday Weekend Windup {Plenty of Winter Fun}

How have you been holding up with this cold spell? I am glad that we were able to get outside for a bit this weekend because I am not a big fan of being stuck inside too long! But, I am not a fan of cold, either.....We did head out to the Christmas in the Valley event at Volkening Heritage Farm in Schaumburg this weekend. It is one of my favorite events and was just picture perfect with the falling snow on the farm! Above is the wintry scenes from one of the buildings on the farm. It truly felt like a Christmas on the farm!

There are plenty of activities this weekend to add some more picture perfect memories! Here is a look at what caught our eyes:

Wednesday, December 11

Illumination at the Morton Arboretum will run through January 4th. The new interactive light show will begin each evening at 4:30PM with the last entry at 8:30PM. (Please note that the event is closed November 28, December 2, 9, 16, 24, 25). Walk along a trail and hug a tree to see it glow, sing to another and see it light up and discover other fun ways to interact with trees! Tickets are $15 per adult, $10 per child (2-17) or $10 per adult member and $5 per member child. Tickets include daily admission to Arboretum. You can order tickets online.

Enjoy the Cosley Zoo  Festival of Lights in Wheaton daily 3PM-9PM through December 30. Twinkling light displays will sparkle throughout zoo. There will also be a tree sale through December 24. Purchase special holiday gifts in the gift store. Admission is free. The zoo is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day. We have been to this event before and have found it perfect for the really little ones! On Saturday, there will also be a craft corner event from 10AM-2PM with a suggested family donation of $5. Make some crafts, have cookies and visit with Santa. You can have a picture with Santa printed for $3.

Head over to Eggsperience Pancake & Cafe during their Toys for Tots Giveaway event through December 15. Dine in any Eggsperience Pancake & Cafe and they will donate a toy in your honor. If you bring in a new toy to donate, you will get a free kids meal or a side!

Friday, December 13

Be caught up in the moment during the Winter Spectacular at Prairie Lakes Theater in Des Plaines. The artistic dance show will be held at 7PM on Friday and 2PM on Saturday. The fun will include the dance show, crafts, a visit by Mr & Mrs Claus and face painting. The costs are $8 for general admission and $5 for dancers/students/seniors.

Visit the Cuneo Museum in Vernon Hills for the Open House with Santa from 6:30PM-9:00PM. Enjoy a visit with Santa, crafts, self-guided tours of the mansion, hot chocolate and cookies and more. A wine and beer bar is additional. Drive through the holiday lights display as well! The event is $5 pp and an additional $10 per car for the light show.

Saturday, December 14  

Children will enjoy Storytime with Santa, Mrs. Claus and Elf at The Book Market in The Glen Town Center from 9AM-11AM. Come listen to stories and take pictures. The event is drop in and free!

Lego fans will enjoy the Lego Train Show in Cantigny Park in Wheaton Saturday and Sunday 9AM-4PM. There will be a couple of lego train displays and a free craft. Admission is free and parking is $5, $2 before 10AM and waived if you bring new, unwrapped toy for donation.

Head over to Elk Grove Theater for a free screening of the movie "Elf" with Santa. The fun starts at 10AM. 
Knupper's Christmas Craft Fair is from 10AM-4PM at Knupper Nursery in Palatine. Admission is free. 

Pictures with Mr. and Mrs. Claws will be held at the Buddy Foundation in Arlington Heights from 11AM-3PM. Photos cost $7.50 which is donated to the shelter.

Santa Paws will be visiting Kriser's Vernon Hills from 12PM-3PM. Bring your pets for pics with Santa! Photos cost $15, which includes a 4" x 6" photo that is printed onsite.

Kline Creek Farm in West Chicago is holding Christmas Memories House Tours from 10AM-4PM. See the farmhouse all decked out for the holidays.There will also be blacksmithing demonstations from 1:30PM-3:30PM. Admission is free!

Whole Foods Market Northbrook is holding a Gingerbread Decorating Class from 11AM-3PM The event is drop in. Choose a house or man and allow your creativity to be inspired. Materials are provided. The event costs $19.99 per house, $8.99 per gingerbread man. 

Ride the Polar Express at Blackberry Farm in Aurora Saturday and Sunday from 2PM-6PM. The event costs $5 pp. Ride the train around lake, listen to a reading of Polar Express, enjoy festive activities and visit Santa. There will be cookies, hot chocolate and more!   

There is a Lego Train Show Party at Cantigny Park in Wheaton at 6PM. The party is an exclusive event to celebrate the train show. Enjoy train show w/o long lines. There will be snacks, desserts and hot cocoa for guests. Costs are  $12 per adult member, $15 for non, $6 and $8 respectively for kids 3-12, 2 and under free. Order tickets online or by fax.

Sunday, December 15 

Would your family like to work on an easy service project? Attend JUF Helping Hands at Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills from 10AM-12PM and help the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago make greeting cards for veterans, placemats for seniors, snack bags for children in need and charity boxes for home. The charity event is free and drop in, location is near Carson's.

Do your kids need to do holiday shopping? Head over to Norton's U.S.A. and they will help your kids shop for gifts for family and friends. You decide the amount, Norton's will help the kids shop and even wrap the gifts! The kids will make their own tags and will receive a little treat. Children's Shopping Day runs from 12PM-4PM.

Timmermann's Ranch and Saddle in Island Lake will have Pony Rides with Santa from 2PM-4PM.  The free event includes pony rides, hot chocolate and cookies. Donations to the food pantry will be accepted.
