Wednesday Weekend Windup {Sailboats, Fireflies and more!}

It is 9PM on Wednesday evening which means we are over the hump and it is time to think weekend! If you are looking for some extra fun this weekend, here are our picks:

ROAD TRIP: The Bristol Renaissance Faire begins! This is one of our favorite events of the year and is only on weekends July 11-Sept. 7. There is so much magical and special days with different themes and promotions, so check the website!

  • May 23-Sept 7 Butterflies and Blooms, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM, $6 per adult, $5 per senior, $4 per child 3-12, 2 and under free, members get $1 discount, parking $30 per car on weekends
  • Butterfly House at Peck Farm, Geneva, Mon-Sat 10AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, suggested $2 donation per person, $5 per family, see our previous visit to Peck Farm
Thursday, July 9:
  • July 9-12 Windmill City Festival, Batavia, music, carnival, beer garden, food, craft show and flea market, pet parade, games, strolling entertainer, dueling pianos and more, check schedule, free admission and parking, some activities have fees
  • July 9-11 Taste of Park Ridge, local food vendors, puppet shows, live music, family fun day July with free family fun zone, kiddie rides, bounces and more, free admission, see schedule
Friday, July 10:
  • July 10-11 Sidewalk Days, Northbrook, deals from local stores and outside vendors, kids activities including a balloon artist, train rides, pony rides and more
  • July 10-12 Greek Fest, Elgin, Greek Food, kids activities Sat and Sun, vendors, $2 admission but free with this flyer, check schedule for times and prices for rides

Saturday, July 11:
  • July 11-12 Civil War Days, Lakewood Forest Preserve, 10AM-5PM Sat, 9AM-3PM Sun, military encampments, drills, speech from President Lincoln, visits from other period notables, 1863 summer fair, kids activities and crafts, battles, and more, $10 per adult, $5 per child 4-17, 3 and under free, save $1 online or print coupon, check schedule
  • July 11 Pirate Party at Lake Arlington, event at the lake organized by Arlington Heights Memorial Library and AH Park District, 10AM-12PM, games, crafts, balloon artist and more--free!
  • July 11-12 Buffalo Grove Art Festival, Buffalo Grove Town Center, 10AM-5PM, artists and craftsman with their creations, kids activities, food, live music, free admission
  • July 11 The Three Little Pigs, Mount Prospect Public Library, 11AM-12PM, new spin on story by Improv Playhouse, free but must register, performance is fun, not scary!
  • July 11 Petapolooza, Elmhurst Animal Car Center, Elmhurst, 11AM-3PM, rescue groups, face painting, Meatheads with prize wheel, free
  • July 11 Second Saturday and Old Fashioned Baseball, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, baseball themed craft 12PM-3PM, baseball game 1PM-4PM, both in parade field, free, $5 parking
  • July 11 Old Settler's Picnic, Volkening Heritage Farm, Schaumburg, 12PM-3PM, free admission, bring along a picnic for your family, costumed interpreters will be spreading 1880's merriment, food and beverage also for purchase
  • July 11-12 Theatre-Hikes: Then Man in the Iron Mask, Morton Arboretum, 1PM, Theatre-Hikes are a great way to enjoy nature, a little exercise and theater! We have been to several theatre hikes and have enjoyed each of them! A theater experience like no other! The first Sunday of the month features a low impact hike. To learn a little more, read our post on Theatre-Hikes from last season! Tickets are $10 per adult, $5 per child for members, $20 and $10 respectively for non. Tickets include admission to the Morton Arboretum. Children under 2 are free.
  • July 11 Firefly Fandango, Spring Valley Nature Center, Schaumburg, 8:45PM-9:45PM, take a wagon ride to see the beauty of fireflies, beverages included, $4 per non resident, $3 resident if you register in advance, $5 at door, registration encouraged

Sunday, July 12:
  • July 12 Model Sailboat Sunday, Chicago Botanic Gardens, 10AM-2PM, watch model sailboats race along North Lake, learn about creating models and more, put together by Chicago R/C Model Yacht Club, free admission, parking is $30 per car
  • July 12 Dairy Day, Elk Grove Historical Museum, Elk Grove Village, 12PM-3PM, milking demos, butter churning, old fashioned games, cheese making demo, make ice cream sundaes, crafts, $4 pp
  • July 12 Sundae in the Park, Village Green, Northbrook, 12PM-4PM, live music, old fashioned baseball game at 1:30PM, sundaes
