Wednesday Weekend Windup {Dog Fun, Fairies, Dragons, Amphibians and more!}

Who is ready to enjoy another summer weekend? I know I am! There is A LOT to do this weekend, so get out those planners. Here are our picks for family fun:

ROAD TRIP: Taste of Wisconsin July 31-August 2 in Kenosha, great food, kidszone fun, live entertainment and more, free admission, see website for more details

ROAD TRIP: The replica Nina and Pinta will be visiting Racine! There will be self guided tours! A unique way for families to learn about Columbus. The ships will be docked July 24-August 1. Admission is $8 per adult, $7 per senior, $6 for kids 5-16, under 5 free. Open 9AM-6PM each day.


July 17-Nov 1, 2015 Nature Connects: Lego with Art by Sean Kenney, Morton Arboretum, amazing lego structures honoring nature, 27 figures, free with admission, $14 per adult, $12 seniors 65+, $9 kids 2-17, under 2 free

July 30-August 2 Chicago Open Figure Skating Competition, Glenview Ice Center, free admission for spectators, see website

July 30 Canine Carnival, Fred P Hall Ampitheatre, 6:30PM-8:00PM, games & activities, vendors, raffles, prizes and more, $6 if you register by 7/29, $8 at door, all dogs must be kept on leash and wear current rabies tag

July 30 Movie at the Lake, Lake Arlington, Arlington Heights, Space Jam will start at 8:30PM, families can bring a long a picnic and start picnicking at 6:30PM, bouncy house and picnic games start at 7:15PM, free

Friday, July 31

July 31 Super Hero Day at Pirates' Cove, Elk Grove Village, come dressed as your favorite super hero, costume parade at 1PM, plays at 12PM and 2PM, admission $11 per child, $9 per Elk Grove resident, free for adults!

July 31 Fire Safety Friday, Fire Zone, Schaumburg, 12PM-3PM, learn fire safety from a real firefighter and have some open play fun, $9 admission, $2 for a craft, 1 adult free with paying child, additional $4

Saturday, August 1

August 1 Barrington Big Trucks, Ron Beese Park, Barrington, 9AM-11:30AM, check and climb into big trucks, train rides, inflatable slides, free!

August 1 Dog Days, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, 10AM-4PM, bring your pooch for fun at Cantigny, must be on leash, have current vaccination tags and be social with other dogs, there will be agility demos, vendors, rescues, pet play area, weiner races, kids crafts for a fee and more, event is free but there is a $5 parking fee

August 1-2 Destination Asia Festival, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 10AM-4PM, enjoy the sights, sounds and flavors of Asia, festival is free with admission, $14 per adult, $12 seniors 65+, $9 kids 2-17, under 2 free

August 1-2 The World of Faeries, Vasa Park, South Elgin, 10AM-7PM Sat, 10AM-5PM Sun, tea party, games, entertainment, falcons, free for kids 12 and under, $11 admission, seniors $8, can buy tickets online

August 1-2 Glencoe Art Festival, Glencoe, 10AM-5PM, art, artists, demos, kids activities, live music and more, free admission

August 1 Country Farm Fair, Wildwood Nature Center, 12PM-3PM, petting zoo, games, ride a wagon ride ($.50), pony rides ($5), food and drinks for purchase, free admission

August 1-2  Theatre-Hikes: Clue the Musical, Morton Arboretum, 1PM, Theatre-Hikes are a great way to enjoy nature, a little exercise and theater! We have been to several theatre hikes and have enjoyed each of them! A theater experience like no other! The first Sunday of the month features a low impact hike. To learn a little more, read our post on Theatre-Hikes from last season! Tickets are $10 per adult, $5 per child for members, $20 and $10 respectively for non. Tickets include admission to the Morton Arboretum. Children under 2 are free.

August 1 River Trails Park District Anniversary Bash, Woodland Trails Park, Mt. Prospect, 5PM-10PM, live musical, Lego Movie, burying time capsule, giveaways, food for purchase, bring blankets and chairs, free admission

Sunday, August 2

August 2 Sunday is Fun Day at Twin Lakes, Palatine, 11AM-3PM, boat races, moon bounce, patio entertainment, youth activities and more, free, check schedule most activity between 1PM-3PM

August 2 Summer Family Day, Illinois Holocaust Museum, Skokie, Illinois Holocaust Museum and ADL - Anti-Defamation League will host a day of family activities that will inspire kids to embrace their identity and learn more about other young people who made a difference in the world. After exploring the Museum's galleries and interactive youth exhibition, families can enjoy a visit from the ice-cream truck at 12 pm. Event begins at 11AM, $12 per adult, $6 per child ages 6-11, students 12-22 and seniors are $8, must register online

August 2  Flint Creek Savanna Self-guided Prairie WalkLake Barrington, 1PM-4PM, free, be sure to bring your smart phone with a keycode reader, see our experience on a prairie walk.

August 2 Science Sunday, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, learn how to identify trees from under their canopy, free but you must register, call 847-381-659

August 2 Amphibians, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, learn the distinctive characteristics of frogs and amphibians, free
