What a weekend ahead! There is plenty to do in the area--families will be in heaven! Sled dogs, groundhogs, eagles and more!
  • January 27-30 Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition, Rockford, teams competing to represent Illinois in the 2017 National Snow Sculpting Comp, viewing hours sunrise-10:30PM each day
  • January 30-31 Eagle Watch Weekend Starved Rock, variety of related shows and presentations, eagle watching hikes, advance tickets for some events available online

  • January 15-February 21 Enchanted Railroad at Morton Arboretum, 12 model trains traveling through the seasons, LEGO train car made of 2,500 bricks by artist Sean Kenney, free with Arboretum admission, get timed ticket at Visitor's Center, $9 Adults ages 18–64
    $8 Seniors ages 65+  $6 Youth ages 2–17
  • January 16-March 26 Once Upon a Time....Exploring the World of Fairy Tales at Arlington Heights Memorial Library: new play exhibit where kids can step into 7 different fairy tales, geared towards children ages 3-10, see other events associated with exhibit
Thursday, January 28:
  • January 28-Feb 2 Groundhog Day, Woodstock, a number of Groundhog Day events, awakening of the Groundhog Jan 28, walking tours of film sites, free showings of film, prognostication at 7AM on Feb 2, tons of over events, many free, some require tickets
Friday, January 29:
  • January 29-31 Make your own Glass Hearts, Patterson Glassworks, Mundelein, 10AM-4PM, $25 or $50 depending on size, first come, first serve
Saturday, January 30:
  • January 30 Groundhog Day, Big Run Wolf Ranch, Lockport, 10AM-4PM, will Hal see his shadow?, sled dog, resident animals including wolves, cougar, bear, coyotes and more, music, food, $6 pp 
  • January 30  Juni B. Jones, Northbrook Theatre, 10:00AM or 1:00PM, $12 pp, reserve tickets online
  • January 30-31 Husky Heroes Morton Arboretum, 11AM-4PM, dogsled demos, meet dogs, free with admission, $9 Adults ages 18–64 $8 Seniors ages 65+  $6 Youth ages 2–17 
  • January 30 Great Scott Magic Show, Glenview Public Library, 11AM-11:45AM, must register, the Great Scott will perform his most spectacular magic feats, free
  • January 30 Winter Fest, Oak Park, 11AM-1PM, old fashioned winter fun, ice skating, music, food, skate rentals $1, admission free {Combine with Japan Fest below}
  • January 30 Japan Fest, Oak Park, Oak Park and River Forest HS, 12PM-4PM, showcasing Japanese drums, koto haps, shamisen, traditional dance and more, various activity stations to try out calligraphy, suomo wrestling, using chopsticks and more, free
