Wednesday Weekend Windup {Frogs, Traditions & More}

Weekend ahead! Here are my picks for family fun! Plenty of outdoor events--make sure to check the weather first!

  • ROAD TRIP: March 19-May 15 Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens' tropical conservatory is aflutter with butterflies! A special emergence area allows visitors to witness the butterfly life cycle as butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Enjoy a peaceful stroll among the butterflies admiring the conservatories water features and sculptures. Adults $6 residents/$8 non, Seniors, Veterans and ages 5-18 $4/$6, ages 3-4 $1/$2, age 2 and under are free.
Friday, April 1:
  • April 1 Celebration of Cultures, Pavilion, Elk Grove Village, 6:30PM-8:30PM, learn about different tradtions, dance, food, music, games & activities, arts & crafts, admission is free
Saturday, April 2:
  • April 2 Rookery Watch, Almond Marsh, Grayslake, 8AM-12PM, join Lake County Audubon volunteers watching nests of heron, cormorants and more waterfowl, light refreshments and spotting scope provided, free
  • April 2&3 Free Bog Tours, Volo Bog, 11AM & 1PM, call to verify naturalist is leading tour, good time to see birds without foliage
  • April 2 Free Trail Walk, The Grove, Glenview, 2PM-3PM, guided walk focusing on wildflowers, pond life and insects, free
Sunday, April 3:
  • April 3 3rd Annual Community Showcase, Barrington High School, 11AM-4PM, Barrington's largest business expo, hands-on activities for kids, robotics demo, family entertainment, food & refreshments, free admission & parking
  • April 3 Go Fly a Kite Workshop, Trailside Museum of Natural History, River Forest, 1PM-3PM, learn about spring, wind and weather, try to harness wind after building a kite, $5, for kids 6-12 with an adult, must register by April 1, call  708-366-6530
  • April 3 Fabulous Frogs, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, search the wetlands for frogs and learn how to identify them by song, free
  • April 3 Frog Frenzy, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, learn about frog attributes, free
