Wednesday Weekend Windup {Public Lands Day, Flight Fest, Harvest Powwow and More}

Fall is in full swing! Plenty of fun this weekend! Here are my picks: 

Road Trip: Party on the Pavement in Racine on September 24. The downtown is alive with family activities, live music, a car show, food vendors, art experiences and an art fair, carnival rides and more. There are 5 stages of music! Festival runs 12PM-7PM. One of my favorite events!


  • April 8-September 25 Ribbit! The Exhibit, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 23 larger-than-life copper frog sculptures of frogs performing different activities throughout the arboretum, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+ , $9 Youth ages 2–17 (discounted admission on Wednesdays)
  • All weekend Fall Festivals at Stade's, Didier's, Goebbert's and Richardson's Corn Maze.
Friday, September 23:
  • September 23-24 Annual Harvest and Harmony Fest, Highland Park, live music, local food vendors, kids activities, free admission, see schedule
  • September 23 Autumn Fest, Heller Nature Center, Highland Park, 4PM-7PM, autumn crafts, self-guided nature walks, campfire, hayrides, reptiles, pumpkin hunt and more, $3 pp, cash only
  • September 23-25 Long Grove Apple Fest, Long Grove, live bands, family entertainment, food from local restaurants, $5 pp admission, $10 weekend pass, admission may be purchased online
Saturday, September 24:
  • September 24 National Public Lands Day, Vera Meineke Nature Center, Schaumburg, 9AM-1PM, demos of environmental stewardship, learn how nature is restored, visitors receive a free pack of wildflower seeds, free
  • September 24 Johnny Appleseed Festival, Crystal Lake, 9AM-4PM, craft fair, demos, kids activities, visits with Johnny Appleseed, kids activities require tickets that are $1 apiece
  • September 24 Palatine Jaycees Family Field Day, Falcon Park, Palatine, 10AM-12PM, demonstrate how families can affordably stay fit, various activity stations, free
  • September 24 Flight Fest, Gallery Park, Glenview, 2PM-8PM, kids activities, roaming entertainers and more 2PM-6PM, live music 6PM-8PM, tribute to Veterans at 4PM, free
  • September 24 Party for the Preserves, various preserves--see event list, variety of outdoor activities, hikes, campfires, log carving, pop up playgrounds, shelter building and more, dinner and/or camping requires a reservation, free admission to attend, see website for more info, activities vary by preserve, a few require reservations
  • September 24-25 Passport Europe Festival, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, dancing, music, cuisine, activities and more representing various countries throughout Europe, free with Arboretum admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+, $9 Youth ages 2–17
  • September 24-25 Harvest Powwow, Naper Settlement, Naperville, Native American drumming, crafts, dancing cultural demos and more, vendors with Native American crafts and cuisine, see schedule, $12/ adult, Seniors 62+ $9, children 3-12 $7
  • September 24-25 Art in the Barn, Grounds of Advocate Good Shepherd, Barrington, 10AM-5PM, local artists, live entertainment, Chess Without Borders will test your skills, kids activity tent, "Artist Speaks" allows artists to explain and show how they approach art, petting zoo, $5 pp, under 12 free, net proceeds benefit hospital
  • Also, Harvest and Harmony Fest in Highland Park from above.
Sunday, September 25:
  • September 25 Bird Walk, River Trail Nature Center, 9AM, must register at least 2 days prior, free
  • September 25 Chicago Toy Soldier Show, Hyatt Regency, Schaumburg, 10AM-3:30PM, games and prizes for kids, $8 per person, 12 and under are free
  • September 25 Farm Frolic, Primrose Farm, St. Charles, 11AM-3PM, historic demos, traditional games and crafts, live music, fall foods, big trucks, vintage tractors, straw maze, pumpkin painting and more, $8 pp, $4 2-11, ages 2 and under are free
  • September 25 Nature's Recyclers, Crabtree Nature Center, 1PM, learn about fungi, insects and other creatures that help keep our environment healthy, then look for them, free
  • Also, Passport to Europe, Harvest Powwow and Art in the Barn from above.
