Wednesday Weekend Windup {Civil War Days, Birds, Origami and More}

The weekend is around the corner! There is a lot a fun ahead -- here are my picks for this weekend in the Chicago suburbs:
  • May 6-21 Lilac Time at Lilacia Park in Lombard, lilacs and tulips in bloom, check calendar of events -- this weekend parade and craft show
  • May 20 - October 22 Origami in the Garden, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, metal sculptures honoring the Japanese Art, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64 ($9 Wednesdays*)
    $12 Seniors ages 65+  ($8 Wednesdays*) $9 Youth ages 2–17   ($6 Wednesdays*)
Friday, May 19:
  • May 19-21 Long Grove Chocolate Fest, Long Grove, chocolate scavenger hunts, chocolate creations, live music, food vendors, kids area, hours vary, $5 admission pp, kids under 12 are free
  • May 19-21 Ice Shows, Glenview Ice Center, tickets $8
Saturday, May 20:
  • May 20 Mount Prospect Public Works Open House, 9AM-1PM, tour, fun fact hunt, demos, refreshments, free
  • May 20 Antique Fire Truck Show, Lake Barrington, Station #1, historic fire engines, fire safety, refreshments, free
  • May 20 Endangered Species Day, Cosley Zoo, Wheaton, 10AM-2PM, learn about endangered species and how the zoo protects Blandings turtles, live animal interactions, free for residents of Wheaton and $7 for nonresident adults, $6 seniors and free for kids 17 and under
  • May 20 Canyon Tour, Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, 10AM, hike through canyon, some rough terrain, wading in stream, free but must register, call  630-257-2045
  • May 20 Kite Day, Gallery Park, Glenview, 10AM-2PM, bring your kite or make one, experts on hand, kits available, free
  • May 20-21 Civil War Days, Naper Settlement, Naperville, 10AM-4PM,300 reenactors will be on site, $15 pp, $10 youth ages 4-12, under 4 free
  • May 20-21 Malott Japanese Garden Children's Festival, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-2PM, tea ceremony, flute, harp, storytelling, see schedule, free with parking, $30 per car
  • May 20 Bird Tales Story Hour, Wildbird Shack, Mount Prospect, 10:30AM-11:30AM, Bring the kiddos for our FREE Bird Tales Story Hour lead by the Mount Prospect Public Library!   • May 20 What's Blooming On Harrison, Oak Park, 11AM-7PM, local art festival, maker booths, live music, kids carnival, food trucks and more, free admission
Sunday, May 21:
  • May 21  Native Plant Sale by Schaumburg Community Garden Club held at Spring Valley Nature Center 10:00AM-2:00PM
  • May 21 Fahrrad Tour Von Schaumburg Bike Ride and Picnic, Blackwell Elementary School, 12PM, guided tour rides as group, free hot dog or brat, chips and a drink, entertainment, t-shirts for $10 (limited #), free, check website for more details
  • May 21 Museum Day in Elmhurst, 1PM-5PM, fun day exploring Elmhurst's museums, family activities, free
  • May 21 Birds of Prey, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, learn about adaptations that help raptors survive, live raptors on display, free
  • May 21 Lombard Lilac Parade, 1:30PM
