Husky sled team

Time to think weekend! Some of my favorite winter events are this weekend including Husky Heroes and the Norge Ski Jump Tournament! Here are my picks for Chicago suburban family fun this weekend:

Ongoing:
  • January 13-February 19 Enchanted Railroad at The Morton Arboretum:The Morton Arboretum in Lisle will be hosting its annual Enchanted Railroad event. The display is quite intricate and families will enjoy picking out a variety of miniatures. Free with regular Arboretum admission.
Friday, January 26:
  • January 26 Frosty Family Fun, Birchwood Center, Palatine, 6:30PM-8:00PM, crafts, games, indoor snowman building contest and more, must register, $5 per child, $1 per adult
Saturday, January 27:
  • January 27-28 Husky Heroes The Morton Arboretum. Husky sled dogs demonstrate sled-pulling and skijoring. You can check out equipment, meet sled dogs and learn about adopting huskies. Free with regular Arboretum admission.
  • January 27-February 11 Winterfest in Lake Geneva. The event's focus is the US Snow Sculpting Championship. Other events include the Human Dog Sled Race, Cocoa Crawl, chili cook off and more. See schedule for details.
  • January 27-28 Bald Eagle Watch Weekend at Starved Rock in Utica. The evening includes a variety of hikes, kids activities, talks and birds of prey shows. There are some advance ticket sales. Day off is free admission but first come first serve to shows without tickets. 
  • January 27 Open House at Big Run Wolf Ranch, Lockport, 10AM-4PM, dog sledding demos, food, drinks, bonfire, $6 pp, kids 2 and under are free
  • January 27-28 Wizard of Oz, Prairie Lakes, Des Plaines, 10AM Sat & Sun, also 12PM Sat, tickets $15 pp
  • January 27 Frostival, Park Ridge, 11AM-2PM, meet and great huskies, sled demo, public ice skate with Elsah ($4), $6 for stuff your own huskie, free admission, some activities may have small fees
  • January 27 Puppet Place Presents The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Mount Prospect Public Library, 11AM-11:45AM, free but must register
  • January 27 & 28 Norge Ski Jump in Fox River Grove. A thrilling ski jumping tournament and true Illinois experience! The event runs 12PM-4PM each day with gates opening at 11AM. We had so much fun last year! Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 at select local merchants and $11 online. Kids 12 and under are free. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. 
  • January 27 Ice Carving Competition, Rosemont, 2PM-5PM, free, also a bar crawl for the adults
Sunday, January 28:
  • January 28 Winter Scavenger Hunt, Trailside, River Forest, 1:30PM, hunt for signs of animal life and winter plant life, warm up with s'mores and hot drink at the fire, family event, $2 pp
  • January 28 Groundhog Day Again, River Trail Nature Center, 1:30PM, learn the story behind the holiday, free
