We have a mighty special weekend ahead indeed! There are plenty of St. Patrick's Day and Maple Tapping Events this weekend! There is plenty of other fun as well! Here are my picks for family fun in the Chicago suburbs this weekend:


Ongoing:

  • January 26-April 7 Chagall for Children, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 14 interactive exhibits encouraging you to insert yourself into Chagall's work, there are special sensory-friendly hours, the exhibit is free and great for kids ages 2-12, take a peek: https://www.alittletimeandakeyboard.com/2019/01/chagall-for-children.html
  • February 9-March 24 The Orchid Show, Chicago Botanic Garden, see post for more info
  • March 1-22 Virtual Bauhaus, Elmhurst Art Museum, using VR glasses, visitors are students touring the iconic Dessau Bauhaus exploring its architecture, education, design and products. Bauhaus' goal was to harness modern tech to make life better for everyone. The experience is free with admission, see website for more info and open times.
  • Maple Sugaring: March 14-18, March 21-25, March 28-30, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 1PM-4PM, try your hand at tapping with tools from the 1890's, watch maple sugar thicken, taste real maple syrup, free

  • March 15-17 Celtic Fest, McGonigal's, Barrington, families welcome during the day, after 9PM 21+, see website for schedule

  • March 16 Sap's Rising:, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, walk in the maple forest and learn how maple sugaring is done, free
  • March 16 & 17 McHenry Shamrocks the Fox, two days of St. Patrick's Day fun including dyeing the river on March 16, see schedule
  • March 16 Yorkville St. Patrick's Day Celebration, 8:30AM-11:30PM, 5K, music, parade, Irish dance lessons for kids and more, see schedule
  • March 16-17 Sugar Bush Fair, Spring Valley Nature Center, Schaumburg, 9AM-12PM, demos of maple syrup production, a pioneer maple sugaring camp, puppet show, hayride, admission is free, also a breakfast with pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee, $4.50 for half stack, $6.50 for full if register before, $6 and $8 respectively at the door
  • March 16, Maple Fest, Red Oak Nature Center, Batavia, 9AM-2PM, learn how people tapped trees for maple sugar, maple tapping demos, tours every hour, maple snacks and hot beverages for sale, $2 pp, register online

  • March 16-17 Simply Sweet Family Hike, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, select times between 1PM and 3:30PM, on a family stroll learn about how maple syrup is made, make a maple inspired snow globe, taste maply treats, make maple ice cream, enjoy a toasty fire, $19 pp ($16 member), must register.
