Hiking the Hilly, Glacially Created Terrain Along the Ice Age Trail in Whitewater, Wisconsin

Hiking in Whitewater, Wisconsin, offers an intriguing range of experiences, including an adventure traversing a portion of Wisconsin's Ice Age National Scenic Trail. During our hike on the trail, we admired the rustic landscape as we navigated the up and down hilly terrain discovering magnificent views.

Before embarking on the trail, we meandered to Rice Lake.  A short 0.6-mile nature trail loops along the shores of Rice Lake. The short loop offered a pleasant beginning hike before taking on the more difficult trail. Later, our climb in elevation along the Ice Age Trail rewarded with panoramic views of Rice Lake below. Elevation gained along the Whitewater Ice Age Trail is approximately 485 feet.

This segment does link up with the Clover Valley Segment and heads into Kettle Moraine State Forest as well. We only hiked a portion of the moderately strenuous trail. Amazing views of Rice Lake and Whitewater Lake elevelated an already memorable hike through woodlands and wetlands. The rugged nature of the trail highlights the glacial history of the region. Glacially created structures such as kettles and moraines are experienced along the trail.

Kettles are depressions formed when large, buried ice blocks left behind by glaciers melt. Moraines are ridges formed by rock, gravel, soil, and other debris left behind by receding glaciers.

Wildflowers dazzled along the trail. Hiking in late May, we found the trail pretty quiet. Delicate Columbine added a little nature splash right in the middle of our rocky trail! We also savored quiet moments in pine groves. Truly a remarkable landscape and we had it mostly to ourselves!

Beyond the Trail

While exploring this segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, take a little time to uncover some of the treasures in Whitewater. We kicked back with a few craft brews from Second Salem Brewing Co. Second Salem also features pub treats if you are looking for a bite. I love that Second Salem offers small pours so you can try a few brews!

We learned a bit about Whitewater history during a visit to Cravath Lakefront Park. An arch highlights regional history and development. Amazingly, the park is a rehabilitated site once used as a dump site, for oil tank storage, a candle factory, and more. Now, it is a thriving community park.

The park's steel arch highlights significant structures in Whitewater focusing on history and progress. The arch was a 2008 collaborative project between the Whitewater Arts Alliance and the community.

For a true Whitewater experience, visit the Whitewater Flowing Well, an artesian well hand dug by Adam Channing in 1895. At the well, water from an underground aquifer naturally flows or bubbles to the surface. Visitors from all over come to capture the mineral-rich water in jugs. Think about all of the generations that enjoyed water from this well!

Fantastic Sandwiches at Fanatico

For lunch, we devoured Shrimp Caesar Sandwiches at Fanatico. Fanatico is a lovely Italian restaurant with an enticing bakery case in downtown Whitewater. The menu is full of wonderful selections and the bakery case looked amazing. We did not have room for dessert on our visit but next time we are definitely going for a bakery treat!

A jaunt to Whitewater for a hike along this segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail can be accomplished as a day trip from the Chicago area -- or consider a long weekend! We thoroughly enjoyed the challenge the hike presented and marveled at the landscape. Such a great escape!
