Chicago Suburbs Family Fun

As a mom on the go, I am always looking for fun and affordable things to do in the 'burbs. This list is not meant to be a comprehensive list. However, it is a way for us to share with you interesting, fun, and affordable activities that we have found in the area. These are events that we have either been to in the past or we would take our kiddos to:
  • May 19-Sept 15 Butterfly House, Peck Farm, Geneva, 9AM-5PM Mon-Sat, Sun 12PM-5PM, closed Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, suggested donation, $2 pp or $5 per family
  • July 7-September 3 Saturdays and Sundays plus Labor Day -- The Bristol Renaissance Faire
  • June 22-???? Troll Hunt at The Morton Arboretum -- see large scale trolls being made from reclaimed wood. Free with admission.
  • Chicago Air and Water Show
  • August 15-19 Lake Geneva Venetian Festival, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, water ski show, carnival, arts and crafts fair, live entertainment and more, see schedule
  • August 17-19 Evanston Art & Big Fork Festival, see schedule
  • August 17 Back to School Campfire, Spring Valley Nature Center, Schaumburg, 7:30PM-9PM, bring a blanket or lawn chair, roast marshmallows, take a hayride, $2 pp, s'mores kits are $1
  • August 18 Hummingbird Fest, Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, Lemont, 9AM-2PM, activities, viewing and bird banding demos, free
  • August 18 Bug Fest, Red Oak Nature Center, Batavia, 9:30AM-1PM, presentations, bug hunts and more, free admission, park at Schneider school for shuttle, food for purchase
  • August 18 Malott Japanese Garden Summer Festival, Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, 10AM-3PM, tea ceremony, story telling, music, hands-on activities and more, free, $30 parking, see schedule
  • August 18-19 Long Grove Vintage Days, Long Grove, 10AM-6PM, all things vintage including entertainment, free admission, plenty of vintage items to peruse, a penny carnival and more
  • August 18 Beat Street Back To School Bash, Beat Street, Arlington Heights, 10:30AM-2:30PM, reserve spot to make free slime (847-749-3045), visit back to school braid bar and get hair styled with chalk paint (washes out), raffles and prizes throughout the day
  • August 18 Itasca Family Day and Food Trucks, 11AM-3PM, live music, family fun, food trucks
  • August 18 Fred Fest, Port Barrington, 12PM-6PM, local music entertainment, family activities, purchase tickets online, $ raised goes to preserve restoration
  • August 18  Viking Ship Tours, Geneva, 1PM-4PM, replica Viking ship, tours, $5 adults, $3 teens, kids free
  • August 18 Back to School Festival, Peck Farm, Geneva, 11AM-2PM, scavenger hunt, games, activities, birds of prey presentation and more, free, treats for purchase
  • August 18  German Beer Garden, Schaumburg, Volkening Heritage Farm, 4PM-7PM (last call 7PM, $5 pp, children ages 3 and under are free, pretzels are free with admission, beer and soda for purchase, bring a picnic, German music and entertainment
  • August 18 & 19 Walking Plays at The Morton Arboretum: The Brothers Grimm, 6PM, Adult $15.00 member/$20.00nonmember, Child $10.00 member/$15.00 nonmember, purchase tix online
  • August 19 Hummingbird Sit, Sagawau, Lemont, 10AM-12PM, watch hummingbirds in the viewing area, a naturalist will teach you about their habits
  • August 19 Wheeling International Festival, Heritage Park, Wheeling 1PM-7PM, performances from over 25 regions, arts and crafts, food and vendors
  • August 19 Picnic at Kinder House
  • August 26 Ukele Festival, Aurora
