Chicago Suburbs Family Fun

As a mom on the go, I am always looking for fun and affordable things to do in the 'burbs. This list is not meant to be a comprehensive list. However, it is a way for us to share with you interesting, fun, and affordable activities that we have found in the area. These are events that we have either been to in the past or we would take our kiddos to:
  • January 13-February 19 Enchanted Railroad at The Morton Arboretum:The Morton Arboretum in Lisle will be hosting its annual Enchanted Railroad event. The display is quite intricate and families will enjoy picking out a variety of miniatures. Free with regular Arboretum admission.
  • January 17-20 Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition at Sinnissippi Park in Rockford. Witness the snow sculpting talents of area snow sculptors. Admission is free. 
  • January 20 Bald Eagle Day, McHenry Dam, 8AM, free'
  • January 20-21 American Heritage Living History Show, Kane County Fairgrounds, St. Charles. 9AM-5PM Sat, 9AM-4PM Sun, history demos, hands-on history, $7 per adult ($5 if in period dress), $10 weekend pass, kids 12 and under are free
  • January 20 Bald Eagle Appreciation Day, Willowbrook, Glen Ellyn, 10AM-2PM, free, meet live birds, guided hikes, activities and more
  • January 20-21 Wizard of Oz, Prairie Lakes, Des Plaines, 10AM Sat & Sun, also 12PM Sat, tickets $15 pp
  • January 20 Rock & Mineral Identification, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, Elmhurst, 10:30AM, $5 per person, $3 per member, ages 8 and up, reservation necessary (630) 833-1616, admission $5 pp, $2 per child & $3 per teen
  • January 20 Winter Exploration Day at Thatcher Woods in River Forest 12PM-4PM. Snowshoeing and other snow activities. Learn to track animals in the snow, navigate and make snowshoes from natural materials. Weather permitting. Free
  • January 20 Winter Sleepers, Trailside Museum of Natural History, River Forest, 1PM, learn about animals that sleep through the winter, free
  • January 20 Rockin' Jewelry for Kids, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, Elmhurst, 1:30AM, $10 per person, ages 8 - 16, reservation necessary (630) 833-1616, admission $5 pp, $2 per child & $3 per teen
  • January 20  XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness exhibit at Arlington Heights Memorial Library Opening Party, 6PM-8PM, must register
  • January 21 Snowshoe Nature Hike, Trailside, River Forest, 1PM, guided hike on snowshoes if 4 or more inches of snow or on foot, free but must register: 708-366-6530
  • January 21 Wonderful Winter Wildlife, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, learn how local wildlife adapts for Chicago winters, free
  • January 27 Open House at Big Run Wolf Ranch
  • February 3 Winter Fest, Lake Katherine
  • February 10 Snowdaze Ice Carving Festival in Kenosha
  • February 10 Downtown Hot Chocolate Walk, Naperville
