With Earth Day and Arbor Day around the corner as well as what seems to be shaping up into a lovely weekend, it is really time to get outside! Here are my picks for family fun this weekend:
Ongoing:
  • March 19-May 15 Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens' tropical conservatory is aflutter with butterflies! A special emergence area allows visitors to witness the butterfly life cycle as butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Enjoy a peaceful stroll among the butterflies admiring the conservatories water features and sculptures. Adults $6 residents/$8 non, Seniors, Veterans and ages 5-18 $4/$6, ages 3-4 $1/$2, age 2 and under are free.
  • April 8-September 25 Ribbit! The Exhibit, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 23 larger-than-life copper frog sculptures of frogs performing different activities throughout the arboretum, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+ , $9 Youth ages 2–17 (discounted admission on Wednesdays)
Friday, April 15:

  • April 15 Family Night: Fly a Kite, Cantigny Park, Wheaton, 5:30PM-7:30PM, Chicago Kite will be present to do demos, bring your own kite, kites will be for sale, free admission, $5 parking

Saturday, April 16:
  • April 16 Rookery Watch, Almond Marsh, Grayslake, 8AM-12PM, join Lake County Audubon volunteers watching nests of heron, cormorants and more waterfowl, light refreshments and spotting scope provided, free
  • April 16 Earth Day & Arbor Day Celebration, Village Green, Northbrook, 8:30AM-12:00PM, recycling drop off, clean up teams gathering at 8:30AM, 9AM-12PM--exhibits, ecofriendly home techniques, free seedlings, info on local farmers, pony rides, entertainment and more, free admission, tree planting at 11AM
  • April 16 Earth Day Celebration, Kent Fuller Air Station Prairie, Glenview, 10AM-2PM, family activities, nature walks, environmental exhibits and more, bring gently used or new shoes to donate to Share Your Soles, free
  • April 16 Earth Day, Friendship Park Conservatory, Des Plaines, 1PM-3PM, hands-on activities for kids, plant a seedling, decorate a pot, greenhouse tours, gardening tips, free; you can also join a clean up effort 11:30AM-3PM--see website for more info and to register for clean up
  • April 16 Free Trail Walk, The Grove, Glenview, 2PM-3PM, free guided trail walk focusing on pond life, insects and wildflowers
Sunday, April 17:
  • April 17 Northbrook Celebration of Cultures Fair, North Suburban YMCA, Northbrook, 12PM-2PM, experience the diverse cultural backgrounds of the North Shore, dancing, food, singing, art, free
  • April 17 Celebrate Earth Day, Heritage Park, Wheeling, 11AM-1PM, kids' crafts, help plant a butterfly garden, music, guided nature tours, free
  • April 17 Earth Day Celebration, Emily Oaks Nature Center, Skokie, 12PM-4PM, learn how Emily Oaks changed over the past 200 years, learn how people took part in shaping the prairie, Earth-friendly foods available for sale, native plant sale, free admission
  • April 17 Geocaching 101, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 12PM-2PM, learn how to navigate this technology based scavenger hunt, use one of the center's GPS units or your own, supplies limited
  • April 17 Springtime on the Farm, Volkening Heritage Farm, Schaumburg, 12PM-4PM, experience a spring day working on the farm, sow seeds, wash clothes and more, see demos, crafts, $4 pp or $16 per family, children 3 and younger are free
