Truco Taqueria empanadas and guacamole in Mount Prospect, IL

The beginning of May is particularly festive during Cinco de Mayo celebrations. This Cinco de Mayo, Truco Taqueria and Margarita Bar at Randhurst in Mount Prospect, IL will be feting its new menu with new meal options and drinks. DJ Marco Herrera will be in residence from 6PM-11PM spinning tunes. Such fun! Last week, my husband and I enjoyed pre-Cinco de Mayo cheer at Truco and enjoyed a casual atmosphere allowing us some much deserved time to unwind and enjoy Mexican street food.

Fresh chips and salsa and Topo Chico at Truco

As we browsed the menu, we munched on fresh chips and salsa. I was delighted to find out that Truco has Topo Chico -- a Mexican sparkling mineral water that I love. So, I had to have a cold bottle! We ordered some guacamole to savor with our chips. I was actually pretty surprised by the amount of guacamole we received. So, definitely a worthy treat if you are just stopping by for a drink and a snack.

The menu features share plates, flat breads, salads, tortas, burgers, breakfast, burritos and tacos. With 14 different tacos on the menu, choosing tacos is a novelty. We opted to start our meal with an order of beef empanadas. I loved the way the empanadas were plated. They were delicious -- especially the crust!

Of course, we had to order tacos! I ordered the two chicken selections -- Chicken Tinga and Chicken Pipian Verde. The Chicken Tinga is pulled chicken in an adobe salsa with caramelized onions, avocado and queso fresco. A very delicious taco! The Chicken Pipian Verde is one of the newer tacos and features pulled chicken, tomatillo sesame and pumpkin seed sauce, queso fresco, fresh cilantro and toasted seeds. When I saw this taco on the menu, I was pretty intrigued by the incorporation of pumpkin seeds. The Chicken Pipian Verde is another delicious taco and I loved the extra crunch of the seeds.

My husband ordered the Cochinita Pubil and the Carne Asada. The Cochinita Pubil incorporates Yucatan style pulled pork, habenero, pickled purple onion and cilantro. The Carne Asada features marinated sliced steak, Oaxaco cheese, scallions and avocado salsa. Once again, delicious tacos!

Of course, we did need to sample a dessert during our visit. I must admit that I always appreciate a little bit of sweet after my meal. We enjoyed fried donuts with nutella accompanied by a chocolate sauce. A sweet ending to our lunch!

Truco Taqueria is a fun place for a festive meal. We real love the wide range of tacos and the ability to choose quite inventive combinations. Truco's creations are the work of local Chef Juan Luis Gonzalez famous for Mago. The taqueria sits next to the AMC theater at Randhurst and is perfect for a quick bite.
