Jack-o-Lanterns

The weekend is almost here! Things are starting to get a little spooky around here as we move towards Halloween! Of course, there still are the warm hues of autumn and plenty of autumn fun ahead. Here are my local picks for family fun this weekend:


Friday, October 5:

  • October 5-7 Highwood Pumpkin Festival, jack-o-lanterns, carnival rides, festival events and more, $3 daily admission, $5 weekend pass, kids 6 and under are free
  • October 5-6 Oktoberfest, Naper Settlement, Naperville, 5-10 Fri, 12-10 Sat with kids activities 12-4, $15 per adult, $10 per youth, kids under 4 are free, check website for more details
  • October 5-7 Scarecrow Fest, St. Charles, incredible number of scarecrows around town crafted by area organizations and businesses, craft show, entertainment, carnival and more
Saturday, October 6:
Sunday, October 7:
  • October 7 The Grove Folk Fest, The Grove, Glenview, 11AM-5PM, historical interpreters, Native American flute circle, square dancing, hayrides and more, $4 adult, $1 child, food for purchase
  • October 7 Autumn Harvest Festival Volkening Heritage Farm, Schaumburg, 12PM-5PM, hands-on demos from the frontier era, cider pressing, blacksmith demos, thrashing and more, $5 per person, $20 per family
  • October 7 Oktoberfest at Twin Lakes, Palatine, 1PM-4PM, hayrides, pumpkin patch, face painting, Oktoberfest fare
  • October 7 & 8 Falling Into Autumn Walk, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, free
Monday, October 8:
  • October 8 Museums at Cantigny Open for Columbus Day, 10AM-5PM, $5 park
  • October 8 Exploring Native American Culture, Des Plaines History Center, 12PM-1PM, make a Talking Feather Craft, presentation by Kim Sigafus starts at 1PM, opportunity to participate through drumming, singing and more
Also: Richardson Corn MazeShades of Autumn at Stade's, Pumpkinfest at Didier's and Apple Tree Maze, fall fun UPick and more at Royal Oak Farm Orchard.
Troll Hunt at The Morton Arboretum -- see large scale trolls being made from reclaimed wood. Free with admission.
