Ice Carving, Chocolate, Orchids, Science and More Family Fun in the Chicago Suburbs

We have a really fun weekend ahead in the Chicago suburbs! Plenty of winter, chocolaty, science exploring and art exploring adventures for families are ahead! Here are my picks:



Wednesday, February 6:
  • February 6 Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition at Sinnissippi Park in Rockford Febuary 6-9. Witness the snow sculpting talents of area snow sculptors. Viewing is daily  from sunrise until 10:30PM. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Friday, February 8:
  • February 8-10 Create a Glass Heart at Patterson Glassworks, Mundelein, 10AM-4PM, drop in, $35-$65, see website for more info
  • February 8-9 Ice Fest in Downers Grove, check website for info, live carving both Friday and Saturday, meet Elsa opportunity Saturday, winter crafts, free
Saturday, February 9:
  • February 9-10 Chocolate Weekend, Morton Arboretum, Chocolate Tastes, 9AM-4PM, free with admission
  • February 9 Farmhouse Museum Tours, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 10AM-3PM, tours on the hour, blacksmithing demo at 1:30, free
  • February 9 Rock and Mineral Identification,Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, Elmhurst, 10:30AM, $8 per person, members free, ages 8 and up, reservation necessary (630) 833-1616, admission $5 pp, $2 per child & $3 per teen
  • February 9-10 Gnome Globes and Gnome Hunt, Morton Arboretum, 11AM-2PM, Children's Garden, hunt for gnomes in the Children's Garden (hunt is free with admission), then create a globe to bring home, globes are $7 pp for members, $10 for non, must purchase ticket in visitor's center, limited number, admission is separate, weather permitting
  • February 9 Winter Wonders, Campton Hills, 11AM-3PM, sled dogs, campfire, s'mores, flint napping, winter walk, field of dreams horses and more, free
  • February 9 Ice-a-Palooza Wheaton, Central Athletic Complex Ice Rinks, 11AM-2PM, ice carving, meet Elsa and Anna, open skate, bring skates or rent, skate performances and more
  • February 9 Winter Exploration Day, Trailside, River Forest, 12PM-3PM, learn to navigate, learn about tracks, create snowshoes, free
  • February 9 Snow Daze in Kenosha, 12PM-3PM, ice sculpting, pop up hot chocolate stand with free cocoa, ice skating
  • February 9 Naperville Chocolate Walk, 12PM-5PM, $30 per person, benefits 360 Youth Services, purchase tickets online
  • February 9 Farm life in winter, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 1:30PM-3:30PM, learn about farm chores in the winter, free

  • February 10 Wildlife in Color, Des Plaines History Center, 1PM-3PM, enjoy Peggy McNamara's, artist in residence at the Field Museum, show at the center, Emma Marston will host a hands-on art activity relating to the show, for kids 5-12 with families, free
  • February 10 Family Open House at FermiLab, Batavia 1PM-5PM, explore science, live demos, hands-on experiences, free
