Chicago Suburban Native Plant Sales 2019

Native Plant Sales in the Chicago area are around the corner. There are opportunities to order your plants early to ensure you receive the plants you are looking for to attract native butterflies, birds and bees to your yard. I put together a list of local sales to help with your garden planning.



Benefits of Native Plants:

Native plants are specially adapted to your locale's climate. They do not need pesticides or fertilizers. Once established, they generally do not need to be watered. I have been gradually switching over my yard to more natives over the past five years and have found my natives much easier to care for. Additionally, my yard attracts many more bees (great for the garden), birds and butterflies including monarchs. Each year, my yard is more vibrant and exciting! Here are some sales to help you add more natives to your yard:

April 20-21 Friends of Volo Bog Native Plant Sale, Visitor Center at Volo Bog, 10AM-3PM Sat, 11AM-3PM Sun, pre-order by 3PM April 13

April 27 Wheaton Native Plant Sale: Public Works Building, 8:30AM-11:00AM, payment must be by cash

April 28: Skokie Native Plant Sale at Earth Day Celebration at Emily Oaks Nature Center 12PM-4PM

May 4-5: Citizens for Conservation Native Plants Sale at Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington, 9AM-3PM (online orders end April 14; pick up date for pre-orders is May 3)

May 5 WPPC Native Plant Sale, McHenry County College, in the cafeteria, 12PM-3PM, check and cash only

May 6 Native Plant Sale, College of DuPage Natural Areas, 9AM-1PM, selling plugs of native plants from greenhouse, proceeds go to help restore prairie

May 11 Native Plant Sale, Lake Katherine, Palos Heights, 10AM-2PM

May 10-11: Native Plant Sale at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook, 11AM-7PM May 10; 9AM-2PM May 11; pre-orders have begun for the first 350 people

May 11 McDonald Farm Plant Sale, Naperville, 8AM-1PM

May 11-12 Lake County Forest Preserves Native Plant Sale at Independence Grove, May 12 9AM-3PM, May 13 10AM-2PM; compost bins & rain barrels on May 12 only, the annual sale is a fundraiser for environmental educational programs and events

May 18-19: Native Plant Sale by Schaumburg Community Garden Club held at Spring Valley Nature Center 10:00AM-2:00PM; pre-order by May 3

May 18-19 Plant Sale, Reed-Turner Nature Center, Long Grove, Long Grove-Kildeer Gardening Club, more info to come

June 2019 Wild Ones West Cook, Oak Park, pre-ordering starts March 15; location and time for pick up still being determined
