Unearth Science Festival Provides Hands-on Garden Science Learning for Families

Spring is here and all sorts of plants and animals are waking up from slumber for a busy season ahead. With the nature's wonders unfolding before our eyes, this is the perfect time for Chicago Botanic Garden's Unearth Science Festival. The two day family festival features a large range of hands-on science experiences and workshops as well as a presentation by Tom Skilling on climate change and The Guardians documentary discussing the interwoven lives of monarch butterflies and an indigenous community in Mexico.

Explore Nature and Learn from Scientists!

The Unearth Science Festival will include over 40 hands-on science learning activities geared towards children ages 7-12. Highlights include:
  • Science workshops including exploring fungi, becoming a citizen scientist, making a bee home and more. Registration is required for workshops and there is a fee.
  • One workshop will help you learn which foods will get you through the Zombie Apocalypse! (Registration required.) Cool!
  • Make a seed necklace and watch it sprout!
  • Learn about the lives of bees and become a bee!
  • Learn about pollination and which flower is the best at moving pollen.
  • Study flowers like Chicago Botanic Garden Scientists.
  • Get inventive and build your own pollinator! Hmmmmmm........
  • Each of the areas will have sensory activities for toddlers and younger children.
  • WGN-TV Meteorologist and Chicago Botanic Garden Board Member Tom Skilling will present on "What's New with Climate Change?" at 2PM on April 13.
  • The Guardians which is a documentary on the lives of monarchs interwoven with indigenous people in Mexico will be shown on April 14 at 2PM.
  • Great opportunities to talk to Garden scientists one-on-one throughout the festival and learn about their work on saving pollinators, climate change and more.
  • On the evening of April 13, an expert from the Adler Planetarium will help you use telescopes to see the night sky. (7:30PM-9PM, weather permitting)

Dates and Times: Unearth Science Festival will run April 13-14 from 10AM-4PM. Weather permitting, there will also be Night Sky Viewing on April 13 7:30PM-9:00PM.

Admission: Admission is free. Parking fees apply. Workshops are $10 pp ($8 for members) and you must register. Many hands-on activities are free.

Special Science After Hours for Adults April 12!

There will be a special evening of science fun just for adults on April 12 6PM-9PM. Learn by dissecting a coneflower, building your own pollinator, lounging on a huge pollen grain and more. You will have opportunities to meet Garden scientists. Themed drinks and food will be available for purchase. $8 member/ $10 non in advance, $11/$13 after but I recommend reserving your space. Parking fees will apply. Don't let the kids have all of the fun!
