A Taste Exploration of Mexican Favorites at Tamales

Wowed by a Pumpkin Tamale. Seriously, Tamales A Mexican Joint in Highland Park, Illinois expertly crafts Pumpkin Tamales. Once I learned about -- and tried -- Tamales' Pumpkin Tamale, I knew this eatery would usher me through an incredible food adventure!

The Art of Tamales

Tamales crafts four different tamales and I had the pleasure of trying -- and loving -- all four of them! There truly is an art to sculpting the best tamales and the chef at Tamales is an expert!  Each tamale was SCRUMPTIOUS, so it is difficult to zero in on a favorite. I absolutely LOVED the Mushroom Tamale. The Mushroom Tamale comes lovingly draped with a roasted red pepper sauce. Delicious!

Next, I sampled the Chicken Tamale which is served with both the roasted tomatillo and guajillo chile sauces. The dish looks like a tapestry too pretty to eat. Alas, I had to do my duty and sample the Chicken Tamale. Once again, incredible!

You may wonder "how does a Pumpkin Tamale taste?" "Like heaven," I say! Tamales' Pumpkin Tamales are best sellers and people come from all over for this special treat. I was pretty amazed by how the pumpkin and slight spices went with the roasted tomatillo and guajillo chile sauces. The texture is smooth and perfect!

Finally, I sampled the Shrimp Tamale. So delicious! Beware -- the special shrimp cream sauce is highly addictive!

If I had to pick favorites -- while I enjoyed all four tamales -- my favorites happen to be the Mushroom Tamale and the Pumpkin Tamale. Dynamite! But, I would gladly nibble on any of the four!

Diving Into Enchiladas

Tamales has much more to its menu than tamales! Another one of my Mexican favorites happens to be enchiladas. So, I had to try some! I enjoyed special tasting portions of both the Chicken Enchilada smothered in delicious mole and the Shrimp Enchilada covered with tomatillo sauce. The mole is incredible! Another well-crafted sauce not to be missed!

After savoring on the Chicken Enchilada, I nibbled on the Shrimp Enchilada which IMMEDIATELY became another favorite. I can see -- errr, taste --- why Tamales is a Highwood institution!

Burritos -- Can Feed You for 2 or 3 Tasty Meals!!!

The burritos at Tamales came very highly recommended. When ordering a burrito, be prepared -- they are HUGE! My Chicken Burrito hooked me from the beginning! The chicken, cheese, refried beans and pico de gallo stuffing weaves together an incredible comfort food! Now, Tamales' burritos are MASSIVE!  One could feed me for three meals.

Additionally, I sampled the Chicken Tinga. The chicken was incredibly tender and lovingly enveloped with a tinga sauce. Another delicious meal!

Sweet Endings with Key Lime Pie

You may be surprised to hear that a restaurant named Tamales is famous for its Key Lime Pie, but Tamales sure is! When you visit Tamales, you ABSOLUTELY must leave room for a slice of Key Lime Pie or bring one home. Perfectly smooth with the right tanginess, the Key Lime Pie melts in your mouth! The freshly whipped cream sports a bit of a tang as well. Yummy!

Count me in as a new Tamales fan! The food at Tamales is so incredibly well crafted and will have you falling in love at the first bite! I can tell you that the mushroom tamale is already beckoning me back.......
