Mount Vernon Gardens: An Ode to George Washington in Omaha, Nebraska

Mount Vernon Gardens in Omaha, Nebraska delights visitors with a little bit of the magic of the gardens of Mount Vernon more than a thousand miles away. Since Mount Vernon is one of my favorite historic homes to visit, I definitely had a visit to Mount Vernon Gardens on my list to visit when in Omaha.

We wandered the gardens during the thick of summer, so they were quite vibrant and abuzz with bees and butterflies. While walking the grounds, we felt the gardens were quite stately and elegantly arranged.

The gardens represent a half-size replica of Washington's original estate. Just as Mount Vernon overlooks the Potomac River, Mount Vernon Gardens overlooks the Missouri River.

The idea to create a replica of Washington's estate gardens was initially suggested around 1927. Students of the Technical High School were invited to submit a miniature design in 1929. The design was displayed and a spring flower show. Construction on the official gardens began in 1930.

This special little remembrance of the Washingtons is a unique find in Omaha. Today, the gardens present a favorite spot to wander or repose in nature. The location is quite popular for weddings and once you have visited, you will see why! We enjoyed our little turn about the regal gardens. Mount Vernon Gardens is a lovely addition to an Omaha adventure in warmer months.

  1. What a great read! Mt Vernon Gardens is a hidden gem in South Omaha, along with Mandan Park. We are currently trying to save Gifford Park Drive that goes through Mandan Park as the city has failed to work alongside the many neighbors who have worked so hard to keep up the grounds and park. City officials just want to close the road, which will absolutely ruin the park. I am sharing your article on our "We Are South Omaha" Page and also "Friends of Mandan Park" page. I honestly don't think many people know the story and history behind Mt Vernon Gardens. Thank you for this wonderfully written article. Have a wonderful Holiday,
