As a mom on the go, I am always looking for fun and affordable things to do in the 'burbs. This list is not meant to be a comprehensive list. However, it is a way for us to share with you interesting, fun, and affordable activities that we have found in the area. These are events that we have either been to in the past or we would take our kiddos to:
  • May 18-September 21 Butterfly House, Peck Farm, Geneva, Mon-Sat 9AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, closed Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, $2 pp donation, $5 per family
  • May 25-September 2 Butterflies and Blooms, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM daily, see website for fees, weather dependent
  • August 23-25 Palatine Street Fest
  • August 24-25 Potawatomi Trails Pow Wow, Shiloh Park, Zion, Native American singing, Native American dancing, porcupine quillwork demos, storytelling and more, $5 pp, children 6-12 $1, elders over 65 free, Sat 10AM-10PM, Sun 10AM-5PM, check website for more info and 2-day special
  • August 24-25 45th Annual Oak Park Ave Lake Arts and Crafts Show, Oak Park
  • August 24-25 Port Clinton Art Festival, Highland Park, 10AM-6PM
  • August 24 Prairie Fest, Prairie House, Westchester, 10AM-4PM, tour the restored house, raptor program, 10:30AM-12:30PM, re-enactors, quilt display and more, prairie walk
  • August 24  Build a Bird House, Wildbird Shack, Mount Prospect, 10:30AM-12PM, $45 per team, build a bird house with your favorite little one, must register
  • August 24 7th Annual Color Aloft Balloon Festival, Grayslake, Central Park, 3PM-9PM, 1 launch and 1 glow, free admission
  • August 24 German Beer Garden, Volkening Heritage Farm. 4PM-7PM, German music, pretzels, games, $5 includes a pretzel or pickle and reusable glass, beer and soda for purchase, bring a picnic
  • August 24-25 North Shore Shakespeare Festival, Gallery Park, Glenview, 4PM, see As You Like It performed by Center Stage, free
  • August 24-25  Walking Plays Alice Through the Looking Glass, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 6PM, $20 adult/$15 child ($15/$10 for members), reserve tickets online
  • August 25 Feet Fest Family Adventure Run, Palatine, 8:45AM, 2 mile course with obstacles, $25 day of registration, registration starts at 8AM
  • August 25 City of Lights Ukelele Festival, Downtown Aurora, 11AM-6PM, enjoy workshops, shop vendors, uke strums, open mics, by donation, tickets $15 pp or $30 per family online, children under 12 are free
  • August 25 Walk in the Park, North School Park, Arlington Heights, 10AM-5PM, juried art show featuring art from the Midwest, art for sale, kids art activities, free
  • August 25 Concours D'Elegance Car Show, Geneva, 10AM-4PM
  • August 25 Sunflower Stroll, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, enjoy sunflowers and the sights and sounds of a late summer walk, bring water, a hat and bug repellent, free
  • Fun and affordable every week: Saturdays 11AM-3PM Free Crafts Lake Shore Learning Center
