Earth Day is Friday---which means there are plenty of fun activities this weekend! Here are my picks:
Ongoing:
  • March 19-May 15 Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens' tropical conservatory is aflutter with butterflies! A special emergence area allows visitors to witness the butterfly life cycle as butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Enjoy a peaceful stroll among the butterflies admiring the conservatories water features and sculptures. Adults $6 residents/$8 non, Seniors, Veterans and ages 5-18 $4/$6, ages 3-4 $1/$2, age 2 and under are free.
  • April 8-September 25 Ribbit! The Exhibit, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 23 larger-than-life copper frog sculptures of frogs performing different activities throughout the arboretum, free with admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64, $12 Seniors ages 65+ , $9 Youth ages 2–17 (discounted admission on Wednesdays)
Thursday, April 21:
  • April 21 Spring Spectacular, Pioneer Park, Arlington Heights, 6PM-8PM, candy hunt, petting zoo, train rides, inflatables and more, free
Saturday, April 23:
  • April 23 Rookery Watch, Almond Marsh, Grayslake, 8AM-12PM, join Lake County Audubon volunteers watching nests of heron, cormorants and more waterfowl, light refreshments and spotting scope provided, free
  • April 23 Party for the Planet, Cosely Zoo, Wheaton, 10AM-2PM, environmentally friendly organizations and businesses will be present to share tips on helping the environment, entertainment, non resident adults $5, seniors $4, free for ALL kids and residents of Wheaton
  • April 23 Annual Extreme Block Party Consumer Expo & Taste, Libertyville High School Fieldhouse, 10AM-3PM, local exhibitors, demos, giveaways, raffles, reptile show at 10:30AM, food samples, health and wellness screenings, free admission
  • April 23 Open House at Big Run Wolf Ranch, Lockport, 10AM-4PM, $6 pp, music, visits with cold blooded animals, see animals living at ranch, food, gift shop and more
  • April 23 Earth Day Celebration 2016, Prairieview Nature Center, Crystal Lake, 11:00AM-4PM, guided nature hikes, games and crafts, puppet shows, exhibitors, food vendors, free admission 
  • April 23 Family Kite Fly, Century Park, Vernon Hills, 11AM-1PM, bring a kite or purchase one for $6, kite license plates for sale to benefit afterschool programs
  • April 23 Astronomy Day, College of Lake County, 10AM-4PM, free Star Party at 7PM, make a comet, see the sun through a special telescope, walk a model of the solar system, exhibits, altitude balloon displays and more---free! See the night sky with special strong telescopes at 7PM--also free!
  • April 23 Earth Day Celebration, West Park Field House, Des Plaines, 1PM-4PM, make a craft, plant a bean, free oak tree to first 150 guests, free
  • April 23 Earth Day Woodland Walk, Trailside Museum of Natural History, River Forest, 1PM, guided walk exploring the wonders of spring, free
Sunday, April 24:
  • April 24 Earth Day Nature Play Day, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 12PM-3PM, Earth day family activities in the nature play area, free
  • April 24 Wildflower Walk, Rivertrail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, guided walk, free
