Snowshoeing ideas in the Chicago suburbs

Snow is on the ground so it is time to think about snowshoeing! We have a variety of locations that not only permit snowshoeing in a lovely landscape but rent snowshoes, too! When renting, be sure to bring along your driver's license because they may require it be held during rental. Also, you may want to call ahead to verify availability of rental snowshoes.

Springbrook Nature Center in Itasca: Springbrook Nature Center not only has the trails but also has snowshoes for rent. There must be at least 3 inches of snow on the ground for snowshoeing.  Snowshoes are rented Saturday and Sunday 11AM-3:30PM and cost $5 per person.

Red Oak Nature Center in Batavia: Red Oak Nature Center is located on the Fox River in Batavia. You can rent snowshoes there for $5 per person from 10AM-3PM on weekends and 9AM-4:30PM on week days.

Forest Preserves of Cook County: All of the Nature Centers have snowshoes available with the exception of Sagawau. River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook has several upcoming snowshoe events. You will need to register and there are a limited number of snowshoes available. Check the events calendar.

Spring Valley Nature Center: Spring Valley Nature Center has snowshoes available for rent when there is at least 4" of snow on the ground. Rentals are $4 per person for a maximum of 3 hours per day. They are available 9AM-3PM and must be back by 4:30PM. Driver's License or a form of ID required.

Morton Arboretum in Lisle: The Morton Arboretum has snowshoes for rent when there is an accumulation of at 4" of snow. For adults rentals are $11 per adult member for 2 hours, $12 per nonmember, $15 and $17 respectively for a full day. For kids the prices are $9 ($11 nonmember) for 2 hours and $13 ($15 nonmember) for the whole day. Admission to the Morton Arboretum is $14/adult, $12/senior and $9/child. These are winter rates through March. Rentals are available at Visitor's Center. It is recommended that you call to verify availability first.

Lake Katherine in Palos Heights: Lake Katherine rents out snowshoes for $5 per person per hour with a minimum of one hour. Rentals are Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM, last rental at 3:45PM and Saturday 10AM-4PM, last rental at 2:45PM

Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville: Blackwell Forest Preserve not only has snowshoeing but also a hill for tubing. Two in one! The hill is open 9AM-4PM on Saturdays and Sundays and December 19-January 3 (except Christmas) and January 16 and February 26 . Tube rental is $5 per day ($7 for nylon). 3" of snow on the ground is needed Snowshoe rental is $8 per person per 2 hours, $13 per day. Snowshoe rental ends at 2PM, tube rental at 3:30PM

Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center in Oak Brook: Fullersburg Woods Education Nature Center has snowshoe rentals 10AM-2PM daily. Snowshoe rental is $8 per person per 2 hours, $13 per day.
