Lots of weekend fun ahead! Here are my picks:


Ongoing:
  • January 13 - February 19 Enchanted Railroad at The Morton Arboretum, Lisle. The display is quite intricate and families will enjoy picking out a variety of miniatures. Viewing the railroad is free with regular Arboretum admission.
  • Winterfest in Lake Geneva: Lake Geneva will be holding its Winterfest January 28-February 12. The event's focus is the US Snow Sculpting Championship. Other events include the Human Dog Sled Race, chili cook off and more. The event starts on January 28 with The Abominable Snow Race on January 28. The race is a snow obstacle course. There is a smaller one for kids that costs $25 per participant. Spectator entry is free. Snow sculpting starts February 1 and snow blocks will be built Jan 30-31.

  • February 11-March 26 The Orchid Show, Chicago Botanic Garden, Orchids in Vogue, some days feature live music, some hands-on elements, dress made of organic materials including orchids and more, adults $10/$12 for members/nonmembers; $8/$10 for kids and seniors; parking is $30 per car; you may purchase tickets and parking online
  • February 11 STEM Event, Bright Horizons Northbrook, 9AM-11AM, explore with oobleck, geodome, bubbles and more, for parents and kids infant-kindergarten, free but please RSVP
  • February 11-12 Lego Trains, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 9AM-5PM Sat, 11AM-4PM Sun, free, drop-in
  • February 11-12 Chocolate Weekend at Morton Arboretum, chocolate vendors and demos, free with regular admission, $14 Adults ages 18–64  $12 Seniors ages 65+

  • February 11-12 Norge Ski Jump in Fox River Grove: enjoy a thrilling ski jumping tournament in Fox River Grove. The event runs 12PM-4PM each day with gates opening at 11AM. Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 at select local merchants and $11 online. Kids 12 and under are free. Bring blankets and lawn chairs
  • February 11 Winter Exploration Days, Thatcher Woods Pavilion, River Forest, 12PM-4PM, fun winter activities, look for animal tracks, free
  • February 11 Valentine Family Geocache, Lincoln Marsh, Wheaton, 1PM-2PM, $10 per resident, $12.50 per non, must register, 630-871-2810
  • February 11 Mardi Gras Family Night, RecPlex, Mount Prospect, 4PM-8PM, fortune teller, Dixieland band, reptile show, bring your bathing suit for a splash in the pool and more, $5 for residents, $7.50 for non, adults are free, please register

  • February 12 Fermilab Family Open House, Batavia, 1PM-5PM, explore physics with hands-on activities, take a tour and more, free
  • February 12 Animal Attraction, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, learn ways that animals choose their mates and raise their young, free
  • February 12 Sit Down With a Skunk, River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, learn about skunks' special adaptations and meet a resident nature center skunk, free
