Hope everyone has been staying warm! We have a weekend coming up and it WILL be warmer! Here are my picks for family fun in the Chicago suburbs this weekend:

  • Winterfest in Lake Geneva January 26-February 3. The event's focus is the US Snow Sculpting Championship (January 30-February 2). Other events include the Human Dog Sled Race, Cocoa Crawl, Amazing Ice Castles, chili cook off and more. See schedule for details.

  • February 2 Nature Discovery Day, Heller Nature Center, Highland Park, 10AM-12PM, visit nature classrooms, go sledding, enjoy a campfire and roasted marshmallows, visit animals and more, free
  • February 2 Farmhouse Museum Tours, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 10AM-3PM, tours on the hour, blacksmithing demo at 1:30, free
  • February 2 Wonders of Winter, Mayslake Peabody Estate, Oak Brook, 10AM-2PM, ice fishing, geocacheing, snowshoeing, indoor activities about nature, free admission, small fees for some activities
  • February 2-3  Gnome Globes and Gnome Hunt, Morton Arboretum, 11AM-2PM, Children's Garden, hunt for gnomes in the Children's Garden (hunt is free with admission), then create a globe to bring home, globes are $7 pp for members, $10 for non, must purchase ticket in visitor's center, limited number, admission is separate, weather permitting
  • February 2 Long Grove Cocoa Crawl, 12PM-4PM, sample hot cocoa and treats at participating merchants, pick up a map at the Visitor's Center, vote at the end, free
  • February 2 Lake Katherine Winter Fest, Palos Heights, 12PM-4PM, hayrides, snowshoeing, children's crafts, face painting and more, $5 pp and children under 2 free
  • February 2 Groundhog's Day, Crabtree Nature Center, Barrington, 1PM, learn about groundhogs and the history of the day, related art projects, free
