Lanterns, Butterflies, Murals, Chocolate and More Weekend Fun in the Chicago Suburbs

We have another fun spring weekend ahead! Here are my picks for family fun this weekend in the Chicago suburbs:

Ongoing:
  • March 23 - June 2 Simply Spring: The Butterfly Exhibit at Nicholas Conservatory, Rockford, go early as space is limited, adults $6 (Resident), $8 (Non-Resident), senior $4 (Resident), $6 (Non-Resident), Veterans $4 (Resident), $6 (Non-Resident), ages 5-17 $4 (Resident), $6 (Non-Resident). ages 3-4 $2 (Resident), $3 (Non-Resident), ages 2 and under free ($4 admission on Tropical Tuesdays), enjoy butterflies flying around in a tropical setting without leaving the Midwest!
  • May 1-19 Lilac Time, Lombard, parades, heritage walks, wine tastings, beer tastings, concerts, kids day, botanical tour and more, see website
  • May 18-September 21 Butterfly House, Peck Farm, Geneva, Mon-Sat 9AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, closed Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, $2 pp donation, $5 per family
***Blackberry Farm is open for the season so may make for a nice outing soon! Train depot, wagon rides, pony rides, 1800's buildings including blacksmith and much more will fill the day with the littles! One of our favorites when our daughter was little.***

  • May 17-19 Chocolate Fest, Long Grove, $5 per person (kids 12 and under are free), $10 3 day pass online only, live music, chocolate fun, scavenger hunt and more
  • May 17 Butterfly Release Party, Peck Farm, Geneva, 4PM-6PM, 30 min slots, $10 pp, must register
Saturday, May 18:
  • May 18-19 Civil War Days, Naper Settlement, Naperville, reenactors, battle at 2pm each day, $15 per person, $10 per youth, ages 4 and under are free, can order tix online through 12PM Thursday, then purchase at door
  • May 18 Barefoot Hawaiian Family Show, Mount Prospect Public Library, 11AM-11:45AM, free but must register
  • May 18 Mount Prospect Public Works Open House, 9AM-1PM
  • May 18 Endangered Species Day, Cosley Zoo, Wheaton, 10AM-2PM, find out what Cosley Zoo is doing to protect the endangered Blandings' Turtle, live animal interactions, adults $7 pp, seniors $6, kids 17 and under are free, Wheaton 
  • May 18 Build a Bird House, Wildbird Shack, Mount Prospect, 10:30AM-12PM, for kids with guardian, $45 per pair, includes all materials and snacks, must register
  • May 18 Viking Ship Tours, Geneva, 1PM-4PM, tour the Viking Ship that was a gift for the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, $5 per adult, $3 for teens, children are free
  • May 18-19 Spring Planting, Kline Creek Farm, 1:30PM-3:30PM, see the fields and kitchen garden prepped for spring, free
  • May 18 Aurora Water Lantern Festival, River Edge Park, 6PM-10:30PM, $35 pp, day of $40 pp
  • May 18 Free Trail Walk at The Grove, Glenview, 2PM, guided walk focusing on wildflowers, insect and the pond
