While visiting Duluth, we certainly had waterfalls on our minds! On our first afternoon, we traced Lake Superior until we reached Gooseberry Falls State Park.  Our nearly 3.5 mile hike greeted us with many vantage points to enjoy the falls and rapids.

Enjoying the Rolling Rapids:

Large segments of the hike took us along the rapids:

Eventually, we had to climb up. Overall, the climb was not too difficult. Walking sticks helped in some spots.

Overall, our hike was incredible peaceful. We paused in quite a few spots just to be in the moment and absorb the gifts of nature. The trails were pretty quite but I imagine more people take the longer trails in the summer months.

Taking in a Series of Cascades:

Gooseberry Falls really is a series of falls. Most of the cascades are here but there is also an Upper Falls. This particular spot is breathtaking:

The Civilian Conservation Corps at Gooseberry Falls:

The Civilian Conservation Corps did work at Gooseberry Falls State Park from 1934-1942. About 80 structures are in the National Historic Archive. You can actually take a CCC Self Guided Legacy Tour to check out the structures. There is a statue commemorating the CCC's service. Two of my great uncles served in the CCC in Wisconsin, so it is always neat to note these structures and appreciate the work done so we can all enjoy these special natural sites. We are so appreciative!

Overall Impressions:

Hiking at Gooseberry Falls State Park offers stunning day itineraries. A variety of trails beckon all travels. The entire preserves holds stunning views. We are looking forward to returning!

Tips for Hiking Gooseberry Falls:
  • I recommend good hiking shoes. There are areas that can be slippery. Additionally, there were still snowy patches on part of our hike to navigate.
  • Walking sticks proved helpful over icy patches. There weren't a ton but we welcomed the extra element of balance.
  • There are many waterfalls to see in the region, so check out the North Shore Waterfall Tour for a weekend adventure!
  • There are additional trails to take including to Lake Superior.
  • Gooseberry State Park hosts a range of nature activities including fishing and camping.
  • For more of our adventure in the area, check Weekend Getaway to Duluth, Minnesota.
