Walking Plays, Vintage Days, Fred Fest and More Weekend Fun in the Chicago Suburbs August 16-18, 2019
A fun filled summer weekend is ahead! Here are my picks for fun in the Chicago suburbs this weekend:
Ongoing:
- May 18-September 21 Butterfly House, Peck Farm, Geneva, Mon-Sat 9AM-5PM, Sun 12PM-5PM, closed Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, $2 pp donation, $5 per family
- May 25-September 2 Butterflies and Blooms, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-5PM daily, see website for fees, weather dependent
- May 24-September 15 Nature Connects Lego Sculptures by Sean Kenney at The Morton Arboretum, comes with regular admission, see previous post for more details
- July 6-September 2 Bristol Renaissance Faire on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day

- August 16-18 Mid-America Bonsai Show and Sale, Chicago Botanic Garden, Friday 12PM-5PM, Sat & Sun 9AM-5PM, display of over 200 trees, items and trees for sale, $30 per car parking weekend, $25 on Friday
- August 16-18 Evanston Art & Big Fork Festival, 4-9 Fri, 10-9 Sat, 10-5 Sun
- August 16 Back to School Campfire, Vera Meineke Nature Center, Schaumburg, 7:30PM-9PM, $2 pp, bring a blanket or lawn chair, take a wagon ride, roast a marshmallow, s'mores kits for purchase
Saturday, August 17:
- August 17 Hummingbird Fest, Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, Lemont, 9AM-2PM, activities, viewing, demos of banding, free
- August 17 Bug Fest, Red Oak Nature Center, 9AM-1PM, free and fun bug related activities, demos and crafts, pollinator express train for $2 per ride or $10 for unlimited (you will also receive a Bug Fest Bag)
- August 17 & 18 Vintage Days, Long Grove, 10AM-6PM, 2 day market for all things vintage, antique, repurposed and upcycled, live music, free tractor rides starting at 12PM
- August 17-18 Wine and Art Walk, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 10AM-5PM, peruse and shop art from Midwest artists around Meadow Lake, refreshments for purchase, included in normal admission
- August 17 Back-to-School Community Adventure Day, Rolling Knolls, Elgin, 10AM-1PM, paddling, archery and more, equipment provided, free
- August 17-18 Malott Japanese Garden Summer Festival, Chicago Botanic Garden, 10AM-3PM, tea ceremony at 10:30AM, music, drumming, storytelling and more, free with parking ($30)
- August 17 Fred Fest, Fox River Forest Preserve, Fort Barrington, 12PM-6PM, live music, food and drink to purchase, activities, raising money to restore Grassy Lake Forest Preserve, tickets $10 per adult, $5 per child, $25 for families
- August 17 Tour Viking, Good Templar Park, Geneva, 1PM-4PM, $5 per adult, $3 per teen, ages 12 and under free, tour the replica Viking ship with a history
- August 17 &18 Walking Plays Alice Through the Looking Glass, Morton Arboretum, Lisle, 6PM, $20 adult/$15 child ($15/$10 for members), reserve tickets online
Sunday, August 18:
- August 18 Hummers & Flowers, Crabtree Nature Center, 1PM, go on a 1.5 mile hike looking at wildflowers and for hummingbirds, free
- August 18 Wheeling International Festival, Heritage Park Performance Pavilion, 1PM-7PM, performers, vendors and organizations exemplifying the diversity of the area, free admission
