Buzz Spector Exhibit Invites Exploration at Rockford Art Museum

Currently, RAM is featuring an exhibit by visual artist Buzz Spector called Reading Matter. Spector works with books, paper and language creating inventive designs that spark thought. We really enjoyed this exhibit and were delighted by so many of Spector's creations.

Spector's main installation piece "The Confluence" represents the confluence of the Rock River and Kishwaukee River in Rockford. An astounding 5,000 books flow into a confluence. Books within the piece reflection upon portions of Rockford history. Sauntering around the piece admired the books included fascinated me.

Another favorite Buzz Spector is "Polish Postage Stamp" featuring torn postage stamps almost woven in a mosaic. Simply lovely! The texture and bold blend of colors really draw you in.

"Field of Ruins" by Spector features a melding of embossed postcards and sanded postcards. I am pretty amazed by how much this piece looks like my own grandmother's quilts.

Exhibits on the lower floor introduced us to pieces from the Rockford Art Museum's permanent collection. We were impressed by the range on exhibit. We enjoyed not one but several Ansel Adams! Such a fabulous find!

Tabula Rasa by Karena Karras has an intriguing airiness to it.

"Tabula Rasa" by Karena Karras is one of the most intriguing pieces I discovered in the RAM pieces on exhibit. I love the ethereal nature of the gauze and the weightlessness depicted.

This untitled encaustic design by John Andrews intrigued us with its gradation and interesting patterns.

My husband and I loved the gradation and intricate design of the above encaustic design by John Andrews. We enjoy that parts of the piece appear to have a regular pattern and other parts seem more random. Truly a fun piece!

We really loved that the Rockford Art Museum offered plenty of room to move about and observe exhibits. Spaciousness invited exploration. We appreciated the ease of moving around the museum and the ability to discern each piece at different angles. Additionally, the breadth of the art on display added to our experience. With rotating exhibits, Rockford Art Museum inspires in new ways throughout the year.

If you are visiting the Rockford Art Museum, consider also visiting the Burpee Museum to visit with dinosaurs and the Discovery Center Museum for hands-on science fun. Both are adjacent. Additionally, the museum offers a variety of art programs. The gift shop has locally crafted items for sale -- so take a peek!
